Knights quest for WCL championship starts tonight

August 9, 2016

Happy Tuesday, everyone.

----------------------

The playoffs start tonight when we visit Yakima Valley for Game 1 of the best-of-3 South Division playoff series. It starts at 7:05 p.m. at Yakima County Stadium. Lefty Cameron Bishop (1-3, 1.45) of UC Irvine will start for us.

Game 2 will be at Corvallis on Wednesday, as will Game 3 on Thursday, if necessary. Lefty Aaron Pope (4-2, 2.07) of Dixie State is Wednesday's probable. Thursday's probable, if we get that far, is undetermined.

North Division playoff qualifiers Victoria and Bellingham start their playoff series at Bellingham on Tuesday. It resumes Wednesday and Thursday (if necessary) on Thursday.

The WCL Championship Series scenarios are set, should we defeat Yakima Valley and advance to the finals for the eighth time overall and for the first time since 2014.

* If we play Victoria, the HarbourCats would visit Goss Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 13. Aug. 14 would be a travel day and we would play Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) at Royal Athletic Park on Monday, Aug. 15 and on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

* If we play Bellingham, the Knights would visit Joe Martin Field on Saturday, Aug. 13. Aug. 14 would be a travel day and we would host the Bells at Goss Stadium on Monday, Aug. 15 and on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

We have never played Yakima Valley or Victoria in the playoffs. We fell 2-1 to Bellingham in the 2014 WCL Championship Series.

-------------------

Tickets for our playoff series against Yakima Valley are now on sale and are going fast. We will host Game 2 and Game 3 (if necessary) of the South Division playoff series next Wednesday and Thursday, if necessary. We are now offering the opportunity in advance to "opt-in" for tickets to a possible Game 3 on Thursday.

Purchase your tickets online, at our office or by giving us a call at 541-752-5656. Punch cards will not be honored, as they are good for regular-season games only.

--------------------------

Knights' right-handed pitcher Chris Burkholder of Dartmouth was named the West Coast League Pitcher of the Week for Aug. 1-7.

A senior-to-be for the Big Green, Burkholder turned in two masterful relief appearances and helped Corvallis go 5-1 for the week. He earned wins in scoreless relief performances against Gresham and at Cowlitz and threw a combined eight shutout innings, striking out eight and allowing just three hits.

For the season, he was 2-2 with a 1.57 ERA and one save in 12 appearances. He had 33 strikeouts in 34.1 innings.

----------------------

Outfielder Mitch Haniger (2010) of the Reno Aces (Diamondbacks) was named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Month for July.

The former Cal Poly star, the 2012 Big West Conference Player of the Year, led all of professional baseball with 25 extra-base hits in July, the most in any month in the PCL since the 2011 season.

He also led the league in runs scored (30), hits (45), total bases (93), doubles (13), home runs (11), RBIs (35), slugging (.830) and OPS (1.279).

Haniger was traded to the Diamondbacks in 2014 after being drafted by Milwaukee with the 38th overall selection in the 2012 MLB draft following his junior year with the Mustangs. Please click here for more on Mitch's award.

----------------------------

The Knights led the West Coast League in ERA this summer with a 2.65 mark. They were also No. 1 in fewest runs allowed (178), and No. 2 in strikeouts (424).

We were third in batting average (.259), and second in steals (113). However, we were only thrown out 34 times in 147 attempts (.769); steals leader Walla Walla (116) was thrown out 56 times (.674), so we were a much more efficient base-stealing club than the Sweets.

The Knights also fared well among the WCL's individual leaders.

AVERAGE: 6. Zak Taylor, .309 (43-139). 7. Andy Atwood, .308 (53-172).

HITS: 5. Atwood, 53.

RBI: 6. Atwood, 25.

STEALS: 4. Atwood, 19. 5. Emilio Alcantar, 18.

WINS: 8. Jacob Fricke, 5.

STRIKEOUTS: 10. Ryley Widell, 46.

ERA: 7. Aaron Pope, 2.08.

-------------------------

El Paso (AAA Pacific Coast, Padres) outfielder Nick Torres (2012) was 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and a run in a 5-2 win over Fresno on Monday night to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors. He upped his average to .383 since his recent promotion from Class AA San Antonio.

* Clinton (A Midwest, Mariners) first baseman Dalton Kelly (2014) was 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs in a 7-2 win over Beloit.

-------------------

That is all for today. Have a great weekend, see you at Goss Stadium on Wednesday night for Game 2 of the playoffs, and back here on Thursday.

North Division playoff qualifiers Victoria and Bellingham start their playoff series at Bellingham on Tuesday. It resumes Wednesday and Thursday (if necessary) on Thursday.

Fireworks Night concludes regular-season home schedule.

August 4, 2016

Happy Thursday, everyone.

----------------------

Our regular-season home schedule comes to an end at 7:05 tonight when we host the Gresham GreyWolves on Pioneer & PEAK Internet Fireworks Night of the season. The Knights are 2-0 in the series so far and extended their winning streak to seven games in row with a 7-6 win on Wednesday. It is our longest such streak of the summer, and we are averaging five runs a game over that period.

San Francisco righty Grant Goodman (1-0, 2.01) is our projected starter tonight. We will have a big crowd, but tickets are still available.

It is also a Block 15 Thursday and Fan Appreciation Night. Adult beverages and hot dogs are only $2 apiece, and another spectacular fireworks show is planned for after the game. Please note the special 7:05 p.m. starting time.

See you there! If you cannot make it, please catch the game on KEJO-AM 1240, with Mike Parker calling the action.

We then close the regular season against the Cowlitz Black Bears this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at David Story Field in Longview, Wash.

-------------------

Catcher Andrew Susac (2009), traded to the Milwaukee Brewers from the San Francisco Giants on Monday, will remain in triple-A and play for Colorado Springs in the Pacific Coast League. He is on Milwaukee's 40-man roster, however.

According to reporter Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, you can expect to see the former Oregon State star back in the majors in September, when the rosters expand from 25 to 40. Since he's already on the 40man, the Brewers won't have to release anyone to make room for him with the big club.

Wrote McCalvy: "Susac, who hit .309/.407/.716 in 243 plate appearances for the Giants in 2014 and 2015, will begin his Brewers tenure at Triple-A Colorado Springs. But he is a good bet to make it the majors by the end of the season after the team traded starting catcher Jonathan Lucroy to the Rangers in a subsequent deal at Monday's nonwaiver trade deadline."

-----------------------

Alum Matt Andriese (2009) of the Tampa Bay Rays will move back into their starting rotation following the trade of Matt Moore to San Francisco, a deal that also sent alum Matt Duffy (2010) to the Rays. Here is more on that story, from MLB.com.

Matt played at UC Riverside and was the WCL Pitcher of the Year, and our Top Pitcher, in 2009. His younger brother David also played for us in 2010 and 2011 and then played two seasons in Pittsburgh's minor-league organization.

Speaking of Duffy, the former Long Beach State star should be with the Rays shortly. He has been on the DL with an Achilles tendon injury and will report to Tampa Bay after a short rehab stint. Here is more on that story, also from MLB.com.

----------------

Tickets for our Wednesday, August 10, playoff game are now on sale. We will host Game 2 and Game 3 (if necessary) of the South Division playoff series on Aug. 10-11.
