Knights Daily Update

Welcome to the Knights blog

January 9, 2011

Welcome to the Corvallis Knights blog!

This will be THE place to go for news on the Corvallis Knights and on the West Coast League as we prepare for the 2011 season, our fifth at Goss Stadium.

We will have updates on past and present Knights as they continue in their college and professional careers; news about upcoming games and promotions; news and links to happenings around the league, and information on anything else related to the Knights and the WCL.

And even though it's winter and the NFL playoffs are upon us, the 2011 WCL season will be here before you know it. The Knights open at Walla Walla on June 3, and begin their home schedule, which includes the July 26 WCL all-star game, on June 7 when we host the WCL's newest franchise, the Klamath Falls Gems, at 6:40 p.m. at Goss Stadium.

See you at the ballpark, and remember, Go Knights!

Madrigal sparks Knights; Tampa Bay recalls Andriese

November 30, 1999

Happy Friday, everyone.

-------------------------

Great night at Goss Stadium on Thursday. Electrified by three hits from new arrival Nick Madrigal, the Knights edged Bellingham 5-4 to salvage the finale of our three-game series.

A shortstop from Elk Grove, Calif., who will play for Oregon State in 2015-16, Madrigal went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a single, a steal and two runs scored. He also perfectly handled five defensive chances without an error.

And oh, by the way, he didn't even warm up. After flying to Portland, he and a friend drove through heavy traffic on I-205 and I-5 and didn't make it to Goss until about 10 minutes before the game. He changed quickly, and then got to work.

So now it's off to Wenatchee for a weekend series with the longtime-rival AppleSox. Portland's Cole Doherty (0-1, 10.80) is our projected starter tonight; Cory Nelson of PLU will go on Saturday and Austin Kelly of Linn-Benton, who saved Thursday's win, goes on Sunday.

Our roster will be strengthened considerably by the arrival of Madrigal, UC Irvine infielder Cole Kreuter and Washington catcher Andy Cosgrove. The rest of our full-time players are expected to report by Tuesday, when the Knights start a six-game homestand against Yakima Valley and Bend.

The Wenatchee games will be broadcast on KEJO-AM 1240. We are taking a feed from Wenatchee's broadcast team, so Mike Parker gets the weekend off.

-------------------------------

More great news to report. Tampa Bay has recalled RHP Matt Andriese (2009) to the major leagues from triple-A Durham. Matt started the season with the Rays and has been up and down twice since then.

He is 0-1, 4.79 in seven games with the Rays, with two saves and 13 strikeouts in 20.2 innings, and was 1-0, 2.70 in five games at Durham, with 20 strikeouts in 20 innings.

------------------------------------

Make sure to vote for Goss Stadium as a top summer collegiate ballpark in Ballpark Digest's contest to determine the top venue in the country. The first round has us paired against Kiger Stadium in Klamath Falls. You can get a ballot by clicking here. Ive already voted!

----------------------------------

Thursday's crowd of 937 upped our season attendance to 5,794 in four dates. That puts the Knights 797 fans ahead of last year's total through a corresponding number of home openings.

------------------------------------

Indianapolis (AAA International, Pirates) third baseman Brent Morel (2006-07) was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in a 4-2 win over Gwinnett on Thursday night to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors. BeMo is hitting .381 (16-42) over his last 12 games, with a homer, seven RBIs and six multi-hit games.

Honorable mention goes to:

* El Paso (AAA Pacific Coast, Padres) catcher Rocky Gale (2007, 2009) was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs in a 9-6 win over Sacramento. He raised his average to .305.

* Birmingham (AA Southern, White Sox) first baseman Danny Hayes (2010) was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks in a 5-1 win over Chattanooga.

* Mobile (AA Southern, Diamondbacks) outfielder Mitch Haniger (2010) was 2-for-5 with a run in a 6-4 loss to Jackson. Teammate Jimmie Sherfy (2011) pitched two innings of scoreless relief, with two strikeouts.

----------------------------------------

That is all for today. Have a great weekend and we will see you here on Monday and at the ballpark on Tuesday!

Rubber game of Cowlitz series tonight

November 30, 1999

Happy Thursday, everyone.

------------------------

Big game at Goss Stadium on Wednesday night. We rallied to defeat Cowlitz 3-2, and we moved into a tie for first place in the West Coast League's wild-card race.

We will try to win the series tonight in Game 3, set for 6:40 p.m. at Goss Stadium. It's a Block 15 Thursday and Barker Uerlings Insurance Reusable Grocery Tote Bag Night. Enjoy discounted Block 15 beverages, and the first 250 fans through the gates get a reusable grocery tote bag, compliments of Barker Uerlings.

Righty Chris Clements (1-2, 2.10) of UC Santa Barbara is our starting pitcher, opposed by Stanford lefty Chris Castellanos (2-0, 3.85). The Knights then head to Klamath Falls for a Friday-Sunday series with the Gems at Kiger Stadium.

See you at Goss!

---------------------------------

As we mentioned earlier, we pulled even with Yakima Valley in the race for the WCLs wild-card playoff berth. Here are the wild-card standings after Wednesdays games:

Team W L GB

Yakima Valley 20 18 -

Corvallis 20 18 -

---------------------------------

The San Francisco Giants optioned alum Josh Osich (2008), a left-handed reliever from Oregon State, back to triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday. Veteran reliever Jeremy Affeldt was activated from the DL and took Osich's spot on the 25-man roster.

Osich was 1-0, had six strikeouts and did not allow an earned run in 7.1 innings in nine appearances. The three runs he did allow were unearned, owing to an error by former Knight Matt Duffy (2010).

"He'll be back up here," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said of Osich. "I told him, 'You should be proud of where you are.' He has played his way back into being a top prospect for us."

Here is more on that story, from MLB.com.

-------------------------

Bend outfielder Christian Cavaness has signed with the Minnesota Twins and has left the team. He hit .322 in 32 games, with three homers and 17 RBIs.

An NAIA All-American at Lindenwood University-Belleville in Illinois, he is the school's all-time leader in home runs, triples, RBIs and total bases. He will report to Fort Meyers, Fla., in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League.

------------------------------------

The Victoria HarbourCats have signed Victoria native Eric Hegadoren, a 6-foot-9 right-hander from Yavapai College. Hegadoren, who pitched for the HarbourCats in 2014, will be a reliever for the remainder of the regular season.

He joined the team in time for its ongoing series against Bellingham. He played for the Victoria Eagles Provincial Baseball League program before heading to Yavapai, located in Prescott, Ariz.

------------------------------

El Paso (AAA Pacific Coast, Padres) catcher Rocky Gale (2007, 2009) was 2-for-6 with two runs, a double and three RBIs in a 15-2 win over Sacramento on Wednesday night to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors. He is hitting .328.

That is all for today. See you here on Friday, and at the ballpark tonight!

Knights face elimination tonight at Bend

November 30, 1999

Happy Wednesday, everyone.

------------------------

Tough night at Goss Stadium on Tuesday, as we fell 12-1 to Bend in Game 1 of our West Coast League divisional series with the Elks. We are now one game away from elimination and the end of our season.

Game 2 is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Vince Genna Stadium in Bend. Alex Nesbitt of Washington (3-2, 2.77) will start for Corvallis, opposed by Portland's Jordan Wilcox (3-2, 3.78) in a matchup of right-handers.

If the Knights prevail, we stay in contention for our eighth championship appearance and a decisive Game 3 will be played at 6:35 p.m. Thursday. Possible starters for a potential rubber game have not been announced.

--------------------------------

Alum Bud Norris (2005), released by Baltimore last week, has signed with the San Diego Padres and has been added to their 25-man active roster. He has a lifetime 55-66 record in all or part of eight major-league seasons with Baltimore and Houston, who drafted him out of Cal Poly in 2006.

Here is more on that story from the SB Nation website.

--------------------------------

Tuesday night's crowd of 977 raised the season total to a franchise-record 49,443 in 33 dates. With one possible home game remaining, the Knights are 6,716 fans ahead of their 2014 total through a corresponding number of openings.

Speaking of attendance, here is a Baseball Digest story detailing attendance throughout summer baseball. We ranked 23rd out of more than 130 teams (league games only).
