Chris Shaw out with hamate bone injury
June 23, 2014Happy Monday, everyone.
Another successful weekend for the Knights, even though we lost 5-2 on Sunday to Kelowna. We still won our fourth straight series, and as long as we keep winning two out of three we will be just fine.
The team left for Wenatchee at 7:30 this morning for Wenatchee and a three-game series with the AppleSox at Paul Thomas Sr. Field at Wenatchee Valley CC. All three games start at 7:05 p.m., and we'll head home after Wednesday night's game.
We host the Mid-Valley Rockets American Legion team at 6:40 p.m. Thursday in the opener of a 7-game homestand that features a return visit from the AppleSox this Friday-Sunday and then three games with Medford.

Catcher Chris Shaw of Midland CC has returned home to fix a hamate bone injury and won't play again this summer. He hit .194 (6-31) in nine games, with no homers and two RBIs. He will play at Oklahoma in 2014-15.
Pitcher Joey Wise tweaked a hamstring while retiring the final batter of the eighth inning on a strikeout on Saturday night and will be sidelined for about two weeks. A sophomore-to-be at Grand Canyon, Joey is 0-0, 0.00 in four games, with a save and five strikeouts I 6.2 innings.
Pitcher Jason Snodgrass, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound right-hander from Concordia and Ramona, Calif., joined us yesterday. He was 5-6, 3.18 in 13 games in 2014, with 44 strikeouts in 82 innings, and was an NAIA West Gold Glove winner.

Our attendance has risen to 11,860 in 10 openings; that is 63 behind last year at this point. But we'd already had the popular ZOOperstars! at this point in 2013; their appearance this Friday should give us a boost and put us ahead of last year, when we drew a franchise-record 43,529.

Hillsboro (A Northwest, Diamondbacks) pitcher Scott Schultz (2011) threw four shutout innings and had two strikeouts but got a no-decision for the Hops in their 5-3 loss to Vancouver on Sunday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.
Honorable mention goes to:
* Lake County (A Midwest, Indians) pitcher Trevor Frank (2012) had one strikeout in 2/3 scoreless innings and got his fifth save in a 6-3 win over South Bend.
* Kannapolis (A South Atlantic, White Sox) first baseman Danny Hayes(2010) was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs in a 6-5 win over Charleston.
* Richmond (AA Eastern, Giants) shortstop Matt Duffy (2010) was 2-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and two runs in a 7-5 win over Erie. DH Dean Green (2008) was 2-for-4 with a double for Erie.

Knights sign Concordia RHP Jason Snodgrass
June 20, 2014Happy Friday, everyone.
We won again at Cowlitz last night, 3-2 on an unearned run in the ninth, and won the series 2-1. It's our third series win in a row and we are now in second place in the South Division, one game behind Medford.
We returned home after Thursday's game and will face Kelowna tonight, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon (my guess is it was a fun bus ride). The series marks the return of former Knights' player and assistant coach Billy Clontz, who is Kelowna's new head coach. His assistants are ex-Knights' MVPs Richie Jimenez (2008-09) and Dylan Jones (2009-10).
We've got some great promotions coming up for the weekend.
* Tonight is Linn Benton Cowbell Knight. The first 500 fans get cowbells compliments of Linn Benton Tractor. We gotta have more cowbell!!!
* Saturday is our first $1,000 Dash for Cash, present by All-Family Vision Care. Children 12 years and under are eligible to dash for the cash (one thousand $1 bills) on the Goss Stadium infield.
Also on Saturday is our annual free youth baseball clinic, presented by Starker Forests. To register, email [email protected]. It is not necessary to register for this clinic, but to participate, the hold harmless agreement must be completed, signed and submitted at the registration table, which opens at 8:45 am. The clinic runs 9 a.m. until noon and is supervised by Corvallis head coach Brooke Knight. The players serve as instructors.
Sunday is Family Day, presented by MOM Magazine. Come out to the ballpark for a fun-filled family day. Please not the special start time of 1 p.m.

You can never have enough pitching and we strengthened our staff today with the signing of Concordia University senior-to-be pitcher Jason Snodgrass.
He is a 5-foot-9, 160-pound right-hander from Ramona, Calif. Snodgrass was 5-6, 3.18 in 13 games for Concordia in 2014, with 44 strikeouts in 82 innings, and was an NAIA West Gold Glove winner.
Snodgrass was 1-2, 3.09 ERA in 32 innings in seven games as a sophomore and went 6-5, 4.36 in 15 games as a freshman. He captained his Ramona High School team as senior in 2011, and was named a second-team Palomar League all-star. He will join the team in time for the Monday-Wednesday series at Wenatchee.

Johnson City (A Appalachian, Cardinals) outfielder Blake Drake (2013) made his professional debut in a 13-0 win over Bluefield on Thursday night and went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

* Jamestown (A New York-Penn, Pirates) outfielder David Andriese (2010-11) made his pro debut and was 0-for-3 with a walk in a 4-2 loss to Williamsport.
* Vermont (A New York-Penn, A's) pitcher AJ Burke (2012) allowed no earned runs and had two strikeouts in 3.1 innings in a 6-1 loss to Tri-City (Albany).
* Richmond (AA Eastern, Giants) pitcher Josh Osich (2008) struck out one in an inning of scoreless relief in a 6-0 loss to Binghamton.

Mahle makes pro debut with Orem Owls
June 19, 2014Happy Thursday, everyone.
We emerged from our funk in Cowlitz on Wednesday night and thrashed the Black Bears 10-3 before a huge crowd of 1,733 to end our two-game losing streak. We had 13 hits and starter Derrick Mahlum of Pacific Lutheran gave us five solid innings for the win.
Linfield's Chris Haddeland is our starting pitcher for tonight's 6:35 series finale, as Justin Calomeni of Cal Poly has been pushed back a day after pitching on Monday. If we win, that will be three series victories in a row.
We return home after tonight's game and will face Kelowna this Friday-Sunday. It marks the return of former Knights' player and assistant coach Billy Clontz, who is Kelowna's new head coach. His assistants are ex-Knights' MVPs Richie Jimenez (2008-09) and Dylan Jones (2009-10).

Cal Poly Pomona/Cal Poly first baseman David Armendariz, the MVP of our 2011 WCL champions, has signed with the Cleveland Indians and should begin his pro career shortly. He expects to be assigned to the Mahoning Valley (Youngstown, Ohio) Scrappers in the short-A New York-Penn League. He was taken in the 23rd round as the 698th selection.
San Diego State pitcher Justin Hepner, who played briefly for us in 2011, has signed with Miami. He was their 36th-round choice. Congrats to both players!

Alum Scott Schultz allows no runs in pro debut

Tough night vs. Cowlitz on Tuesday, as errors led to a 3-1 loss to the Black Bears in the opener of a three-game series at Longview, Wash. Harrison McGhee of Concordia pitched a great game and deserved a better fate.

Alum David Andriese (2010-11) of UC Riverside has signed with the Pittsburg Pirates, who selected him in the 30th round as the 911th overall pick. He was a second-team all-WCL selection in 2011, when he hit .286 with a homer and 28 RBIs. Ap>Alum Justin Hepner (2011) of San Diego State has signed with Miami, who took him in the 36th round.

Yesterday's crowd of 637 increased our season total to 8,479 in seven home dates. We are 506 fans ahead of last year's record number through a corresponding number of home dates.

Our entire team is almost here. Outfielders Scott Quinlan and Dalton Kelly of UC Santa Barbara and shortstop Alec Smith and pitcher Justin Calomeni of Cal Poly made their debuts yesterday. Oregon State's Logan Ice is due in by the weekend, after resting for several weeks after catching more than 50 games this spring.
Pitchers Alex Nesbitt of Washington and Slater Lee of Cal Poly will be along in the near future too, as they recover from minor injuries sustained late in the season.
All will be nice additions, as we now play on 18 consecutive days before finally getting an off day on July 6.

Great weekend for the Knights. We defeated Yakima Valley on Friday night to win that series, then topped Walla Walla on Saturday and Sunday to win that series, which concludes at 12:05 p.m. today over at Goss Stadium.
We also had a fantastic fireworks show on Saturday night that drew nearly 2,000 fans.

First baseman Kevin Kline capped a spectacular week with a grand slam and a solo home run last night to clinch West Coast League Player of the Week honors for June 9-15. He was 6-for-18 with four home runs, a double and 11 RBIs, with a .478 on base percentage and a 1.056 slugging percentage.

Outfielder Scott Quinlan of UC Santa Barbara arrived in town on Sunday and should be in uniform today. Scott hit .265 (30-113) for the Gauchos this spring, with a homer and nine RBIs. Welcome aboard!
Pitchers Ted Hammond of Seattle University and Brandon Choate of Washington, a returnee from 2013, also arrived since our last blog. They'll be a nice addition to our staff, as we now play on 19 consecutive days before finally getting an off day on July 6.
We expect our remaining full-time players to report shortly. Then we'll be at full strength for another run at the WCL championship.

Corvallis third baseman Jackson Soto, a West Albany High School grad who will play at Oregon State next year, was named the MVP of the Reser's Oregon All-Star Series this past weekend. He hit a triple, a solo home run and played outstanding defense.

Quad Cities (A Midwest, Astros) catcher Jake Rodriguez (2010) was 3-for-5 with two runs, a double and an RBI in a 13-2 win over Wisconsin on Sunday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

* Eugene (A Northwest, Padres) pitcher Max Beatty (2010-12) had two scoreless innings of relief and three strikeouts in a 5-2 loss to Spokane.
* Springfield (AA Texas, Cardinals) pitcher Sam Gaviglio (2009) allowed two earned runs and had three strikeouts in six innings and got a no-decision in a 4-3, 10-inning loss to Tulsa.
* Lake County (A Midwest, Indians) pitcher Trevor Frank (2012) lowered his ERA to 2.28 with a scoreless inning of relief in a 3-2, 11-inning loss to Dayton. He got a no-decision.
* Augusta (A South Atlantic, Giants) pitcher Chase Johnson (2011) threw three scoreless innings and had a no-decision in a 4-2 win over Savannah.

* UC Riverside lefty Dylan Stuart, a standout on our 2011 and 2012 staffs and the owner of the slickest pickoff move in the WCL, has signed a free-agent contract with the Atlanta Braves. He'll get his affiliate assignment shortly, but our guess is he'll be headed to Danville, Va., and Atlanta's rookie league franchise in the Appalachian League.
* Oregon State pitcher Scott Schultz, another 2011 Knight, has signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks and will play for the Hillsboro Hops in the Northwest League, stazrting this weekend in Everett. He was a 10th-round selection.
* Infielder Trace Loehr of Rex Putnam High, who had signed to play for us this summer and for Oregon State next year, has signed with Oakland and will join their Arizona Rookie League team this weekend. He was a sixth-round selection.

Tonight's game will be the first-ever with the Pippins, who joined the league for the 2014 season in the latest round of expansion. Yakima went 1-2 against Wenatchee in its WCL-opening series and then went 1-1 in two nonleague games against the Thurston Senators.
As mentioned, returnee Chris Bishop of Pacific Lutheran draws the opening-night assignment for the Knights. A third-year Knight, he pitched four scoreless innings in a nonleague encounter with the Portland Sea Dogs on June 4 in his 2014 summer debut. He was 5-2, 2.91 in 2013 and garnered second-team all-West Coast League honors.
The Knights dropped 2 of 3 at Bend over the weekend in their first WCL series. First baseman/DH Joe Duffin of Cypress College hit .500 (6-12) with a homer and five RBIs, corner infielder Jackson Soto hit .429 (3-7) with two RBIs and corner infielder Kevin Kline hit .364 (4-11) with an RBI to pace the offense.
For the second series in a row, the opponent's pitching coach will be a major-league veteran. Bend's staff was mentored by Alan Embree; the Pippins' staff is led by Bob Wells, a Yakima native who was 40-28 lifetime in nine years with the Phillies, Mariners and Twins from 1994-2002.

More honors today for 2011 alums Ben Wetzler and Jace Fry, left-handed pitchers from Oregon State.
They were both named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Baseball America All-American teams. Wetzler was a first-teamer on both; Fry was first-team on the NCBWA list and second-team on Baseball America's. Both were earlier named to Collegiate Baseball's All-American teams.
Wetzler is also a finalist for the Dick Howser Award, given annually to the nation's top player by the NCBWA. The winner will be announced Saturday at the College World Series. Wetzler and Fry are also finalists for the national Pitcher of the Year honor, given by the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Knights have signed Oregon State junior outfielder/left-handed pitcher Michael Howard for the 2014 season. He replaces OSU freshman Dan James on the roster; James will play in the Northwoods League instead.
Howard hit .260 (32-123) in 43 games for OSU with six doubles, no homers and 18 RBIs as a junior transfer from Yavapai College in 2014. He hit .325 at Yavapai in 2013, with 17 doubles, three triples, a homer and 28 RBIs in 53 games.
He started his college career at Baylor in 2012 and batted .298 in 46 games, with two doubles, one triple, one home run, 12 RBIs and four steals. He also pitched in six games, making three starts, and was 1-0 with a 2.30 ERA and12 strikeouts in 15.2 innings.
A four-year letter winner at Prescott High School in Prescott, Ariz., Michael earned second-team All-American, first-team all-state and first-team all-region honors as senior in 2011. He was named the No. 3 high school prospect in state of Arizona and No. 147 nationally by Perfect Game; he was selected in the 21st round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft by Minnesota but did not sign.
Welcome to the team, Michael! He'll be able to play on Friday, after OSU's spring term is complete. Catcher Dane Lund (2011-14), who redshirted at OSU this past season, will join us then as well.

Alum Eric Massingham (2006-07) of Cal Poly, a two-time WCL postseason honoree for us, is now pitching for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (Waldorf, MD) in the independent Atlantic League. He is 1-1, 5.75 in a team-high 23 games, with one save and 15 strikeouts in 20.1 innings as a short reliever.
A true baseball traveler who has pitched in the United States in affiliated ball in the Phillies' organization; in Australia with the Canberra Cavalry; and in the Frontier and Atlantic Leagues in independent ball, Mass played for Evansville in the Frontier League in 2013 and was 3-1, 1.25 in 35 games.
