Northwest Conference honors four former/future Knights

Four former/future members of the Corvallis Knights were recognized on the 2017 Northwest Conference all-star team, which was announced on Tuesday.

Future Knight Cason Cunningham (2017) of Linfield was named the Pitcher of the Year, and a first-team all-star. The lefty from Eugene is 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA in 13 games, with 96 strikeouts in 73 innings heading into the final weeks of the season.

Alum Andrew Reichenbach (2016) of George Fox was named the first-team catcher. He hit .237 (22-93) in 28 games, with five homers and 20 RBIs.

And 2017 signees Brady Rediger, a second baseman at Linfield who has signed a 10-day contract, and pitcher/position player Cole Johnson of Pacific Lutheran earned honorable mention.

Rediger is hitting .387 (63-163) in 37 games, with four homers and 21 RBIs. Johnson is hitting .331 (40-121) in 33 games, with a homer and 25 RBIs, and was 3-1, 5.19 in 12 games on the mound, with 32 strikeouts in 59 innings.

* San Antonio (AA Texas, Padres) outfielder Nick Torres (2012) was 2-for-4 in a 6-3 loss to Frisco. Nick played at Cal Poly.

The Victoria HarbourCats have their first major-league player. Alum Nick Pivetta, a right-hander who threw the first pitch in franchise history in 2013, was promoted to the major leagues by the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

Future Knight Rediger has big day for Linfield

Linfield second baseman Brady Rediger, a 10-day signee, had a big day on Sunday as the Wildcats defeated Willamette twice to win the Northwest Conference Tournament championship at Linfield, qualifying them for the NCAA Division III tournament.

Rediger homered in each game and had six hits overall as Linfield concluded its charge through the loser's bracket. The Wildcats won four elimination games after losing their opening-round game. They will learn the location of their regional playoff destination on May 14; the regionals are May 18-22.

* Salt Lake (AAA Pacific Coast, Angels) pitcher Greg Mahle our 2012 MVP, pitched two perfect innings and got a hold in a 12-9 win over Fresno. Greg played at UC Santa Barbara.

* Lake County (A Midwest, Indians) catcher Logan Ice (2014) was 2-for-4 with a double in a 7-1 loss to Great Lakes. He played at OSU.

* Greenville (A South Atlantic, Red Sox) pitcher Stephen Nogosek (2013) threw 1.1 scoreless innings, had three strikeouts and earned his fifth save in a 5-3 win over Greensboro. He played at Oregon.

Alum Mitch Haniger (2010) of the Seattle Mariners is off to a great start this season, his first in the Pacific Northwest. The Cal Poly product, obtained in an offseason trade with Arizona, is hitting 323 (20-62) with a .432 on-base percentage, and a .597 slugging percentage with five doubles, four homers, 11 walks, 15 runs scored and 15 RBIs.

The Knights have signed incoming Oregon State freshmen catcher Troy Claunch and outfielder Kevin Watson Jr. for the 2017 season, continuing a long and successful arrangement with the Beavers.

Claunch is a senior at Vacaville High School in Vacaville, Calif. Watson Jr. is a senior at Beaverton High School.

A 6-foot, 185-pounder who bats and throws right-handed, Claunch is a four-year letterman at Vacaville HS. He played for the Athletics in the 2016 Area Code Games and is rated as the nation's No. 214 high school prospect by Perfect Game.

He was first-team all-league in 2016, when he hit .316, with five doubles, one triple and 21 RBIs. He hit .489, with eight doubles, two triples, one home run and 29 RBIs as a junior and .421, with six doubles, two homers and 10 RBIs, as a freshman.

Watson is a 6-2, 180-pounder who bats left and throw right. A four-year letterwinner for the Beavers, he is rated as Oregon's No. 3 prep prospect by Baseball Northwest.

He was second-team 6A all-state and first-team all-Metro League in 2016, when he hit .314, with six doubles, six triples, 12 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. He hit .351 as a sophomore in 2015, with 11 doubles, one triple, 14 RBIs and four stolen bases.

His father, Kevin Watson Sr., played for OSU coach Pat Casey at George Fox University, and then played three seasons in the San Francisco Giants' organization.

Current Beavers Nick Madrigal and Adley Rutschman played with the Knights before their freshmen years at OSU. So did former Pac-12 all-star catchers Jake Rodriguez, and Andrew Susac, and pitcher Kevin Flemer, a key member of our 2013 WCL champions.

Knights sign Speegle of GFU to 10-day deal

The Knights have signed George Fox University sophomore catcher Gavin Speegle to a 10-day contract for the 2017 season. He is a 6-foot-3, 205-pound sophomore from Eagle High School in Eagle, Idaho.

Speegle is hitting .304 (7-23) in 11 games, with two doubles, no homers and two RBIs this season after going 0-for-1 in one game as a freshman in 2016.

He was a four-year letterman at Eagle HS and earned honorable-mention all-Southern Idaho Conference honors in 2014. He also earned all-conference academic honors in 2013 and 2014.

San Francisco junior Grant Goodman, a returnee from 2016, was nominated for West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for April 10-16, but was not selected.

Goodman shut out Portland on four hits over seven innings and got the win. He had three strikeouts and issued only one walk in improving to 3-2 and lowering his ERA from 4.69 to 4.09.

Alum Andrew Susac (2009), one of nine former Knights on an MLB roster starting the season, has been assigned to triple-A Colorado Springs (Pacific Coast League) by Milwaukee for a rehab assignment. The ex-Oregon State catcher was on the 10-day disabled list with a trapezius injury.He went 1-for-4 on Thursday night in his debut.

The Wenatchee AppleSox will welcome four Pac-12 players and three Seattle University Redhawks to the 2017 squad, head coach Kyle Krustangel announced Monday.

Washington State will send two players to Wenatchee for the first time since 2014, and UCLA offers one current and future Bruin to the Sox roster. Madrigal named Pac-12 Player of the Week

Alum Nick Madrigal (2015) of Oregon State was named the Pacific-12 Conference Player of the Week for March 27-April 2 on Monday. It is the second week in a row a Knights' alum has won the award; KJ Harrison (2015) was last week's winner.

Madrigal went 8-for-20 (.400), with a double, three runs and five RBIs as the top-ranked Beavers defeated St. Mary's once and Stanford three times. He has a 17-game hitting streak heading into today's game at Portland, and is batting .423 (30-71) with 17 runs, 12 RBIs, nine walks, five doubles and two homers during that span.

A franchise-record nine former members of the Aloha Knights or Corvallis Knights started the 2017 baseball season on a major-league roster.

Our big-league Knights are Tyler Anderson; Matt Andriese; Matt Boyd; Matt Duffy; Mitch Haniger; Bud Norris; Marc Rzepczynski; Chris Stewart and Andrew Susac.

Josh Osich, Danny Hayes and Matt Hague made it until the final days of training camp before being sent down. They will join several other alums in triple-A, just one step short of the bigs.

The San Francisco Giants sent alum Josh Osich (2008) to their Sacramento affiliate in the triple-A Pacific Coast League on Saturday. A left-handed pitcher who played for us following his freshman season at Oregon State, Josh had an erratic spring, with a 6.75 ERA in 11 exhibition appearances.

He was 1-3, 4.71 in 59 games with the Giants in 2016, his second season in the majors. He had 25 strikeouts in 36.1 innings, but also walked 19 and hit three other batters as his control was not as sharp as in 2015, when he had just eight walks and no HBP in 28.2 innings.

The Chicago White Sox sent alum Danny Hayes (2010) to their Charlotte affiliate in the triple-A International League on Sunday. The former OSU standout had a great spring with the ChiSox, hitting .318 with two homers and 15 RBIs.

Danny spent 2016 with Charlotte but missed half the season with an injury. He hit .250 in 55 games, with 10 homers and 42 RBIs.

Harrison repeats as Pac-12 Player of the Week

Alum KJ Harrison (2015) of Oregon State was named the Pacific-12 Conference Player of the Week for March 20-26. It was the second week in a row he earned the league's top honor for a position player.

Harrison was 5-for-12 (.417) with three RBIs, four runs and a walkoff base hit as the Beavers swept Arizona. He is batting .337 with seven doubles, two home runs and 12 RBIs heading into this weekend's series at Stanford. click here for more on that story.

Indians send Ice to minor-league camp

The Cleveland Indians have returned catcher Logan Ice (2014) to their minor-league camp. Logan played for us after his freshman year at Oregon State and helped lead us to the WCL Championship Series, where we lost to Bellingham in three games.

He was Cleveland's second-round pick in the 2016 draft and spent the summer with Mahoning Valley (Youngstown) in the short-season Class A New York-Penn League. He hit .198 in 39 games, with two homers and eight RBIs. He was ranked as the No. 22 prospect in Cleveland's organization by MLB.com before this season.

Former Knights' broadcaster Kevin Burke (2012) is now with the Memphis Redbirds, St. Louis's affiliate in the triple-A Pacific Coast League. He began his job as their communications/public relations assistant earlier this month, and is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of programs in media and public relations, social media, and internal communications.

He previously was the Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations for the Salem (Va.) Red Sox, Boston's affiliate in the Class A Carolina League, for two seasons. He managed all media relations aspects for the club and assisted in growing its social media presence from year to year. He has also held similar possessions with the Knights (2012), the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (2013), and the Traverse City Beach Bums (2014).
