Matt Andriese shuts out Oakland

It was a big night this past Saturday for alum Matt Andriese (2009) of the Tampa Bay Rays. The right-hander from UC Riverside, the 2009 West Coast League Pitcher of the Year, threw a 2-hit shutout victory over Oakland for his first major-league complete game.

Matt is now 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA in 16 innings over two games since being recalled from triple-A Durham recently, with eight strikeouts. Please click here for more on his gem, from the Tampa Bay Times newspaper.

* Pitchers Miles Glazier and Michael Martin of UC Irvine and Caleb Henry of Corban will not be joining the Knights this summer, as was expected. Martin and Henry also played for us in 2015.

* Pitchers Justin Calomeni (2014) of Cal Poly and Austin Sodders (2014) of UC Riverside were nominated for Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for May 9-15, but were not selected. Oregon reliever Stephen Nogosek (2013) was nominated for Pac-10 POTW honors, but was not selected.

* Infielder Cody Lenahan (2013), a former University of Portland standout, has signed with the Texas Airhogs, an independent American Association franchise located in Amarillo.

* University of Connecticut senior Joe DeRoche-Duffin (2013-14) is having a big year for the Huskies. Here is more on Joe from the Hartford Courant newspaper.

Charlotte (A Florida State, Rays) outfielder Cade Gotta (2011) was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI in a 3-2 loss to Daytona on Monday night to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors. He raised his average to .340.

San Antonio (AA Texas, Padres) outfielder Nick Torres (2012) was 2-for-4 in an 8-0 loss to Corpus Christi.

Carter Bell signs extension with Slammers

Alum Carter Bell (2009) has signed a contract extension with the Joliet Slammers of the independent Frontier League. The Oregon State alum played for Washington (Pa.) and Joliet in 2015 and had eight homers and 25 RBIs in 64 games. He played several years in the Arizona organization after leaving OSU before being released and turning to independent ball.

The Tampa Bay Rays have recalled pitcher Matt Andriese (2009), out 2009 Knights Top Pitcher, from triple-A Durham of the International League. He pitched seven innings on Sunday and got the win in a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Knights add two players from San Diego

Happy Friday, everyone. Again, we have lots of good news this morning, so we will get right to it.

We have signed two players affiliated with the University of San Diego for the 2016 season. The newest Knights are junior first baseman Roman Garcia and pitcher Louis Crow, a senior at Buena Park (Calif.) High School who will join the Toreros in 2016-17.

Garcia is a 6-foot-1, 210-pounder from Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, Calif., via Southwestern (junior) College. He is hitting .357 (25-70) in 22 games, with three homers and 12 RBIs.

Garcia was a first-team Pacific Coast Athletic Conference all-star for the Jaguars in 2014 after hitting .347, with three homers and 32 RBIs. He was a two-time Metro League all-star at Eastlake HS before enrolling at Southwestern.

Crow is a 6-1, 165-pound right-hander who was also offered by Arizona, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and Pepperdine. He was named honorable-mention underclassmen All-American by Perfect Game in 2015.

Connecticut senior outfielder Joe DeRoche-Duffin (2013-14) of Santa Ana, Calif., was selected as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for games of April 25-May 1. It was the second time in three weeks he'd been so honored.

DeRoche-Duffin finished the four-game week with four home runs, seven RBIs, and 17 total bases, helping the Huskies grab three victories and secure a conference series victory over Memphis. The right fielder opened the week with a pair of home runs in a 5-1 victory over Holy Cross, becoming the first Connecticut player to record two home runs in one game since 2012.

Mahle gets first major-league win

Happy Tuesday, everyone. Lots of good news this morning, so we will get right to it.

Alum Greg Mahle (2012) of UC Santa Barbara, our 2012 MVP, earned his first major-league win on Sunday when he pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the Los Angeles Angels in a 9-6 win over Texas. He struck out one and allowed one walk and one hit.

Mahle was recalled from triple-A Salt Lake City on April 11. He has pitched eight innings in 10 games and has four holds and a 1.13 ERA.

Erie (AA Eastern, Tigers) SeaWolves first baseman/designated hitter Dean Green (2008) was named Eastern League Player of the Week for April 25-May 1. The 26-year old hit .471 (8-for-17) with one double, three home runs, six RBIs, five runs scored, one stolen base, one walk and a 1.059 slugging percentage in five games.

He had at least one hit in all five games and had multiple hits in three of those games. He was 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs in an 8-4 loss against the visiting Trenton Thunder on April 29. Please click here for more details on the award.

UC Irvine senior Elliot Surrey (2013) of UC Irvine, our 2013 Knights Top Pitcher, was named Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week for April 25-May 1 on Monday for his complete-game, 2-0 shutout of Cal State-Fullerton last week.

He allowed five hits, had seven strikeouts and just two walks in a 118-pitch masterpiece. It was his second career shutout.

Alum Angel Landazuri (2014) of UC Riverside was also nominated, but was not selected.

Alums KJ Harrison (2015) of Oregon State and Ryan Walker (2015) of Washington State were nominated for Pacific-12 Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 25-May 1, but were not selected.

Tigers recall 2010 alum Matt Boyd

The Detroit Tigers recalled alum Matt Boyd (2010) of Oregon State from Toledo of the triple-A International League on Saturday and he pitched 4.2 shutout innings in a loss to Cleveland on Sunday in his 2016 MLB debut.

He filled the roster spot vacated by closer Francisco Rodriguez, who was placed on the family medical emergency list to attend to an undisclosed family matter. MLB rules require a player to spend a minimum of three days on the list. Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said there is no clear timetable for how long Rodriguez will be on leave.

He is the second member of the 2010 Knights to appear in a major-league game this season, joining third baseman Matt Duffy of the San Francisco Giants.

Five other alums have played in the majors this year. Pitchers Greg Mahle (2012) of the Angels, Bud Norris (2005) of the Braves, Marc Rzepczynski (2006) of the A's and Josh Osich (2008) of the Giants, and catcher Chris Stewart (2010) of the Pirates, have also appeared.

Knights sign Smith, Fox to 10-day deals

We have some roster news to report.

The Knights have signed Corvallis native Caleb Smith, a Crescent Valley High School graduate who plays at Linn-Benton CC, to a 10-day contract for the 2016 season. Caleb is hitting .333 (23-69) in 22 games, with no homers and 11 RBIs.

The Knights have also signed pitcher Ty Fox, a sophomore righty who is a teammate of 2016 Knight Chase Kaplan at Western Nevada. He is a 6-foot-2, 232-pounder from Central Point who graduated from Crater High School in 2014.

Also, catcher Brent Gibbs of Central Arizona will not join the team as expected. He is attending summer school instead.

Some news from around the West Coast League to report this morning.

Three pitchers, including a pair of left-handers, are the latest additions to the Yakima Valley roster for the 2016 campaign. The Pippins have signed Drake Atlee, a junior right-hander at Cal State Northridge, Thomas Triantos, a freshman left-hander at Cal Poly, and Trent Schulte, a freshman left-hander at Gonzaga, bringing to 15 the number of pitchers currently on the team's roster. The Bellingham Bells have added outfielder Brock Anderson to the roster. Anderson has committed to the University of Washington, traveling from his hometown of Huntsville, Ala. He was a 2015 Perfect Game first-team All-American and a participant in the 2015 USA Baseball Tournament of Stars.

Angels recall Greg Mahle

Some big, big news to report.

Left-handed pitcher Greg Mahle (2012) of UC Santa Barbara, our 2012 MVP, was called up to the majors by the Los Angeles Angels on Monday afternoon.

A 15th-round selection (# 449 overall) by the Angels in the 2014 draft, Mahle was pitching at Salt Lake City in the triple-A Pacific Coast League when he got the call. He's been in the organization three years, has pitched at every level, and was 4-6 in 76 career games, with 27 saves and 116 strikeouts in 97 innings.

He was first-team WCL as a utility player (pitcher/first baseman/DH) and was the WCL's No. 11-ranked prospect by Perfect Game after the season. He pitched our first nine-inning no-hitter that summer, against Cowlitz. He hit .343 (46-134) in 37 games, with 13 RBIs, and was 2-1, 2.74 in nine games as a pitcher, with 19 strikeouts and two saves in 19.2 innings.

"We're really excited to see Greg's continued success in the game," UCSB head coach Andrew Checketts said. "He was a difference-maker in the program who set an example with his hard work and dedication that has been passed on to our current generation of Gauchos.

"We wish him the best and hope he has a long and storied career in the big leagues."

He is the seventh former Knight to make the majors this year. He joins third baseman Matt Duffy (2010) and pitcher Josh Osich (2008) of the Giants; catcher Chris Stewart (2001) of the Pirates, and pitchers Bud Norris (2005) of the Braves, Marc Rzepczynski (2006) of the Athletics and Tyler Anderson (2009) of the Rockies in the majors.

Alums Elliot Surrey (2013) of UC Irvine and Austin Sodders (2014) of UC Riverside were nominated for Big West Conference Pitchers of the Week for April 3-9, but were not selected.

Alum Grant Fink <2011) has been released by the Cleveland Indians after three years at the Class A level in their farm system. He played at Mt. Hood Community College and at Missouri Western. He hit .231 (178-769) in 231 career games, with 18 homers and 105 RBIs.

Mobile (AA Southern, Diamondbacks) outfielder Mitch Haniger (2010) was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in a 5-4 win over Tennessee on Monday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.
