Alum Elliot Surrey (2013) of UC Irvine was nominated for Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for Feb. 22-28, but was not selected. He allowed four hits, and unearned run and had five strikeouts in six innings in a 4-1 victory over Nevada on Feb. 26.

The Walla Walla Sweets have signed WCL veterans Patrick Chung and Nick Nyquist of Gonzaga for the upcoming season. An infielder, Chung played eight games for the Kitsap BlueJackets last season and hit .300 with three doubles and three RBIs. Nyquist, an infielder, played at Wenatchee last summer and hit .254 in 52 games with four doubles and 21 RBIs. Madrigal, Nelson earn Player of the Week honors

Happy Friday, everyone.

Two members of our 2015 squad were named conference players of the week for Feb. 15-21.

New Oregon State freshman second baseman Nick Madrigal (2015) earned Pacific-12 Conference Player of the Week honors for his performance in OSU's first three games in Surprise, Ariz. A native of Elk Grove, Calif., he batted .500 (7-for-14) with two runs scored, one double and six RBIs over his first three games.

Pacific Lutheran senior lefty Cory Nelson (2015) was named the Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week. Nelson pitched a complete game to lead the 17th-ranked Lutes to a 5-2 win and a 2-1 series victory over No. 14 Linfield on Sunday. He allowed only two unearned runs on six hits in nine innings, striking out four and walking five, while earning his first win and lowering his earned run average to 0.90.

Congrats to both players!

Alum Drew Garcia (2007), an infielder from UC Riverside who has played in the White Sox and Colorado organizations since 2008, remains unsigned after declaring free agency after last season. Now 29, he made it to triple-A with Charlotte and Colorado Springs several times and spent last season with Charlotte in the International League.

The other two free-agent Knight alums after last season, Alex Burg (2008) and D.J. Johnson (2008-09), have signed with Texas and the Los Angeles Angels.

Madrigal off to fast start with Beavers

Happy Monday, everyone.

Alum Nick Madrigal (2015) is off to a great start with Oregon State, which is 3-1 after Monday's 10-2 win over Utah in Surprise, Ariz. He is hitting .421 (8-19) in four games, with a double, a stolen base and six RBIs.

Future Knight Kyle Nobach (2016) is hitting .313 (5-16) in four games, with three RBIs and former Knight Logan Ice (2014) is at .357 (5-14) with a homer and seven RBIs. Infielder Christian Donahue (2015) is hitting .300 (3-10), with three runs.

The Beavers have four more games in Surprise this week, two each against Kansas and Kansas State.

Cortes rounds out manager Marcus McKimmy's four-member staff. He succeeds Jacob White, who accepted an assistant coaching job at Emporia State (Kansas) last year. Also returning are pitching coach Bob Wells and assistant Eric Hull, who joined the team prior to the 2015 season.

Harrison named to Golden Spikes Watch List

Happy Friday, everyone.

Alum K.J. Harrison (2015), an Oregon State sophomore, has been named to the initial Watch List for the Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced.

He is one of 50 players on the initial watch list for the award, which is given annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country. Harrison is one of six players from the Pacific-12 Conference. He's also one of 10 sophomores from across the country on the watch list.

The Kailua, Hawaii, native was named the Pac-12's Freshman of the Year in 2015 after batting .309 with 12 doubles, 10 home runs and a league-leading 60 RBIs. The pre-business major was also a consensus Freshman All-American. He hit n.444 for us before leaving the team to join Team USA.

Congrats to K.J., who has also been named to several preseason All-American teams.

Alums Nick Torres ( (2012) and Peter Van Gansen 2013) had big days for the old guys as Cal Poly defeated an alumni team 14-10 last Saturday in its final warmup before today's season-opener against the University of the Pacific.

Torres, probably ticketed for double-A this season, hit a 3-run homer and Van Gansen, a possible high-A candidate after a summer in the Northwest League, hit a two-run single and a double. Both players are in the San Diego organization.

Pitcher Casey Bloomquist (2013) threw an inning for the alums; he is in the Chicago Cubs' system. Infielder Alec Smith (2014) had two hits for the varsity.

Nogosek named to Stopper of the Year watch list

Happy Tuesday, everyone.

Alum Stephen Nogosek (2013) of the University of Oregon is one of 70 pitchers named to the initial watch list for the 12th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. He is a junior right-hander.

Nominations for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award were made by baseball sports information/media relations contacts. The 2016 Stopper of the Year Watch List will be updated with a midseason release on April 27. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released on June 8, prior to start of NCAA Super Regional competition.

The NCBWA's All-America Committee will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced at the 2016 College World Series.

Congrats to Stephen, who has also been named to several preseason All-American teams.

There will be a new playoff format in the two-division West Coast League this season, interim president Holly Jones of the Corvallis Knights announced. The 54-game league schedule will be divided into a first and second half, each 27 games long, and the winner of each half from each division will earn a playoff berth.

The first-half winner from each division will get the chance to have home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs. If one team wins both the first and second half, the team with the second best overall record in the division will earn the second spot.

McAdoo named top Big West freshman by Baseball America

Happy Friday, everyone.

UC Santa Barbara's Michael McAdoo Jr. (2015), a 6-2, 200-pound outfielder from Antioch, Calif., was selected as the Big West Conference preseason Freshman of the Year by Baseball America.

McAdoo comes to UCSB after earning East Bay League MVP and All-American honors at De La Salle High School, where he batted .418 with 20 RBIs as a senior. Baseball America mentioned his athleticism and five-tool potential as reasons he will be the league's top freshman.

Michael hit .230 (14-61) in 22 games for us in 2015, with two doubles, two triples, five stolen bases and six RBIs.

Our local Division III teams have already started their 2016 seasons, and a 10-day signee from George Fox University is off to a great start.

Catcher Andrew Reichenbach, a junior from Newberg, was nominated for Northwest Conference Player of the Week honors for Feb. 1-7. He hit .313 (5-16), with two doubles and six RBIs as the Bruins went 3-1 at the Northwest Conference pre-season tournament in Hillsboro, and in a makeup game against Pacific University.

Two former 10-day Knights at GFU are also off to fast starts. Utility Caylen Clardy (2012), a transfer from Oregon State, has three RBIs and has scored six runs in four games, and outfielder A.J. Valencia (2015) is hitting .500 (7-14) with two doubles, two RBIs and seven runs, also in four games.

Harrison, Nogosek preseason named All-Americans again

More preseason honors for alums K.J. Harrison (2015) of Oregon State and Stephen Nogosek (2013) of Oregon to announce today.

Harrison and Nogosek were named preseason All-Americans by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Feb. 2. Both were second-team selections.

Harrison hit .309 as a freshman in 2015 and led the Pacific-12 Conference with 60 RBIs. He also had 12 doubles and 10 homers, was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, and was a unanimous Freshman All-American. He then played for us briefly before joining Team USA.

Nogosek was 6-3, 2.02 for Oregon in 2015 in 39 games in a set-up role and is expected to the team's closer in 2016. He struck out 60 batters in 58 innings and held opponents to a .196 batting average against. He was a key member of our 2013 championship team, as a pitcher and as a part-time infielder, before his freshman year in Eugene.

Congrats to both gentlemen.

Alum Jace Fry (2011) of Oregon State was ranked the No. 20 prospect in the Chicago White Sox organization in 2015, according to MLB.com. Here is the report on Fry, a left-handed pitcher taken by the ChiSox in the third round of the 2014 draft.

"Fry rebounded from Tommy John surgery that cost him the end of his freshman season and much of his sophomore year at Oregon State to pitch a no-hitter and win Pacific-12 Conference pitcher of the year honors in 2014. He signed for $760,000 as a third-round pick, but 10 starts into his first full pro season he required a second Tommy John surgery.

"While he lacks a standout pitch, Fry has four average offerings and good feel for mixing and locating them where he wants. His 88-93 mph fastball with his slider flash above average more often than his curveball and changeup. He throws from a lower arm slot that provides deception and add sink.

"Fry excels at keeping his pitches down in the strike zone and the ball in the park. His floor stands out more than his ceiling, as he is a good bet to become a No. 4 starter if he can bounce back from another elbow reconstruction."

Jace was 1-8, 3.63 in 10 games at high-A Winston-Salem in 2014, with 39 strikeouts in 52 innings.

Chase Johnson is Giants' No. 26 prospect

Former Cal Poly pitcher Chase Johnson (2011) was the No. 26 prospect in the San Francisco organization in 2015, according to MLB.com.

Here's the report on Johnson, taken by the Giants in the third round of the 2013 draft.

"Johnson went from Cal Poly's closer as a sophomore to buried on the pitching staff as a junior in 2013. He pitched well in the NCAA playoffs, however, spurring the Giants to draft him in the third round. They turned him into a starter and have been pleased with the progress he has shown in his first two full pro seasons.

"Johnson's lone plus pitch at this point is his fastball. He sits at 92-94 mph and peaks at 96 with little effort in his delivery. He also throws a hard slider that gets slurvy and a changeup that can throw hitters' timing off but lacks consistency.

"After pitching exclusively out of the stretch in college, Johnson is getting used to working out of a windup. His control and command improved in the second half of 2014, and at his best he looks like a mid-rotation starter. If he can't refine his secondary pitches, his arm strength still could make him a useful reliever."

Chase was a combined 9-4, 2.82 in 23 games at Class A San Jose and Class AA Richmond in 2015, with 129 strikeouts in 124.2 innings. He was a California League all-star.

Chase was ranked as the No. 9 West Coast League pro prospect by Baseball America and the No. 3 prospect by Perfect Game after the 2011 season and so far he is living up to that ranking.

As we reported on Tuesday, he has been invited to San Francisco's big league camp and it would not be surprising to see him at triple-A Sacramento this season.

Mahle, Chase Johnson invited to big-league camp

Former UC Santa Barbara lefty Greg Mahle (2012), our 2012 MVP, has been invited to big-league spring training by the Los Angeles Angels. He is rated as the No. 12 prospect in the Los Angeles Angels minor-league organization by MLB.com.

Mahle has rocketed through the lower four levels of their farm system since signing in 2014 as a 15th-round draft pick. He was 3-4, 3.26 in 52 games with single-A Lake Elsinore and double-A Arkansas in 2015, with 25 saves, 67 strikeouts in 58 innings.

Also, the San Francisco Giants have invited pitcher Chase Johnson (2011) of Cal Poly to their big-league camp. He was their third-round pick in the 2013 draft and has advanced to triple-A in their organization.

Former Cal Poly outfielder Nick Torres (2012) is rated as the No. 28 prospect in San Diego's minor-league organization by MLB.com.

Here's the report on Torres, taken by the Padres in the fourth round of the 2014 draft:

"Part of the most successful Cal Poly teams ever in 2013 and 2014, Torres signed for $406,700 as a fourth-round pick. He didn't do much in his pro debut but has blossomed in his first full season, earning All-Star recognition in the low Class A Midwest League.

"Torres' strength and the loft in his swing give him solid raw power that got him drafted but haven't translated into much home run production against pro pitchers. He has done a nice job of using the entire field and has a ceiling of a .275 hitter with 15 homers per season.

"Torres may be more of a platoon or fourth outfielder than a regular. He's a below-average runner with an average arm, making left field his best defensive home."

Torres hit a combined .305 in 129 games in low- and high-A in 2015, with five homers and 70 RBIs.

Lee plays prominent part in Cal Poly preseason video

Cal Poly junior pitcher Slater Lee, a returnee from our 2015 squad, gets some love in the Mustangs' preseason promotional video. Please click here to watch.

Slater was honorable-mention all-West Coast League, and ranked as the WCL's No. 30 pro prospect by Perfect Game last season after going 2-1, 2.56 in nine games, with 37 strikeouts in 45.2 innings.

Two alums are listed on D1baseball's top-100 watch list for the 2017 major-league draft. Oregon State catcher/infielder KJ Harrison of Oregon State is No. 9; left-handed pitcher/first baseman Cameron Bishop (2015) of UC-Irvine, a projected returnee in 2016, is ranked 89th.

KJ hit .444 (4-9) in two games for us in 2015 before joining Team USA. Bishop hit .245 (23-94) in 31 games, with 10 doubles, no homers and 15 RBIs, and was 0-1, 3.96 in 10 games as a pitcher, with 35 strikeouts in 25 innings.

Former Cal Poly outfielder Mitch Haniger (2010), an all-West Coast League selection in 2010, is rated as the No. 28 prospect in Arizona's minor-league organization by MLB.com.

Here's the report on Haniger, who was originally selected by Milwaukee in the supplemental first round of the 2012 MLB draft:

"After being taken by the Brewers in the supplemental first-round of the 2012 Draft out of Cal Poly, Haniger looked like he might be a quick-to-the-big-leagues college hitter. Injuries that forced him out of action for over a month derailed that plan, then the outfielder was sent to the D-backs in the Gerardo Parra deadline deal last July.

"Haniger still has a chance to have a solid offensive profile. He has excellent bat speed and good raw power, though he hasn't been able to really tap into it consistently yet. When he's been able to stay healthy and get in a groove, he's shown good plate discipline and the ability to hit for average.

"He's played both center field and right, though his speed doesn't play well in the former and his plus arm plays very well in the latter.

"If Haniger can produce like he did in 2013, including a turn in the Arizona Fall League where he led that circuit in RBIs, he has the chance to be a regular in an outfield corner. A career as a producing fourth outfielder isn't out of the question."

Mitch played in single-A and double-A in 2015 and hit a .310 in 104 games, with 13 homers and 55 RBIs.
