It's opening-day eve!

We're getting close.

The countdown is one. We open our seventh season in Corvallis tomorrow morning with an 11 o'clock game against the Portland Lobos, a U-19 select team comprised of standout high school seniors and college freshmen. It's Science and Art Day and we expect more than 1,700 local elementary school students to jam Goss Stadium.

Then, we hit the road for our West Coast League opening series at Wenatchee (Wednesday-Friday) and Cowlitz (June 8-10) before heading home for our June 12 Big League Chew Opening Night, presented by AmeriTrade, against the Kitsap BlueJackets.

So, we're tan, rested, and ready to go on what we hope will be another championship season on the field, and a record-setting summer for attendance.

Our players and coaches continued to arrive today. We've had a Dane Lund and Kevin Kline sighting at the office, annd assistant coach Billy Clontz, who got into town today, is helping returnee Nate Blackham assemble the uniforms for tomorrow's game, and our upcoming road trip.

What a great weekend of baseball at Goss Stadium for the Beavers, who won the NCAA Corvallis Regional with three tense wins over UT San Antonio, UC Santa Barbara and Texas A&M. They'll host Kansas State in the best-of-3 Super Regionals this weekend, with the winner advancing to the College World Series in Omaha.

Future/alum Knights Andrew Moore (2013), Ben Wetzler (2011) and Jake Rodriquez (2009) were named to the all-regional team. Alum Greg Mahle (2012) of UC Santa Barbara had several strong relief appearances, and Gauchos' reliever and future Knight Dylan Hecht had a save against Texas A&M on opening day.

The Knights have signed Tacoma Community College sophomore shortstop Seth Heck to a 10-day contract. He will join the club for Wednesday night�s West Coast League opener at Wenatchee.

Heck (5-11, 170) hit .330 (62-188) in 51 games in 2013, with a homer and 32 RBIs. He was named a NWAACC West Division all-star, a second-team NWAACC all-star, and the Gold Glover winner for shortstops.

He hit .355 (59-166) in 44 games in 2012, with 22 RBIs. He was a NWAACC West Division all-star, a second-team NWAACC all-star, and the Gold Glover winner for shortstops. A graduate of Kamiak High School in Edmonds, Wash. he was coached by Steve Markley. He was a Westco League all-star shortstop in 2010 and 2011.

Jupiter (A Florida State, Marlins) outfielder Alex Burg (2008) was a combined 3-for-6 with a double, a run and three RBIs in a doubleheader split with Bradenton to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

Honorable mention goes to:

* Charlotte (AAA International, White Sox) third baseman Brent Morel continued his recent hot streak by going 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in a 6-5 loss to Rochester.

Kane County (A Midwest, Cubs) reliever Eddie Orozco (2008-09) pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout and got the win in a 3-2 victory over Cedar Rapids.

Well, another day, another All-American. Former Knights' reliever Jimmie Sherfy (2011), now the closer at Oregon, was named a second-team Louisville Slugger All-American on Wednesday by Collegiate Baseball. Here are the details, from the Oregon website.

He's the third alum/future Knight to earn All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball. Oregon State freshman pitcher Andrew Moore (2013) was a second-team pick and senior pitcher Matt Boyd (2010) was a third-team selection.

Congrats to Jimmie, and congrats again to Andrew and Matt.

Sherfy's award capped off a spectacular day for the Knights and the West Coast League. Five WCL alums earned All-America honors and several more were named to season-ending all-conference teams in the Pac-12, Big West and West Coast Conference. Here's more from the WCL website.

Alum Nick Akins (2007) has signed with the Washington (Pa.) Wild Things of the independent Frontier League. He went 1-for-3 last night against Joliet in his debut. He had been released by the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the independent American Association on May 26.

On Thursday we had a tough time picking a Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day because not many of our minor league alums played, and those that did didn't post great numbers. Today, it's just the opposite, and since we don't want to slight anyone, we're choosing a whole host of CKMLPOTDs

* Charlotte (AAA International, White Sox) third baseman Brent Morel (2006-07) was 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and three RBIs in an 8-4 win over Toledo. He stretched his hitting streak to eight games and upped his average to .394 (13-33) in that span.

* Colorado Springs (AAA Pacific Coast, Rockies) second baseman Drew Garcia (2007) was 2-for-3 with two runs in his Sky Sox debut in a 10-8 win over Tacoma.

* Reading (AA Eastern, Phillies) first baseman Jim Murphy, our 2007 MVP, hit his 11th homer, scored twice and drove in two in a 7-6 win over Bowie.

* Jupiter (A Florida State. Marlins) pitcher James Nygren (2009) threw an inning of scoreless relief and got the win to improve to 3-2 in a 4-3 victory over St. Lucie.

* San Jose (A California, Giants) pitcher Josh Osich (2008) got his sixth save of the year with a perfect ninth inning to preserve a 6-5 win over Stockton. He had one strikeout.

* Clinton (A Midwest, Mariners) first baseman Taylor Ard (2009) was a combined 3-for-5 with a double, a homer, a run and two RBIs in a doubleheader loss to Cedar Rapids.

Moore named Pac-12's top frosh, and All-American

Big news to report this morning, so we'll get right after it.

Oregon State pitcher Andrew Moore, a 2013 Knight, was named a second-team ll-American by Collegiate Baseball on Thursday. Teammate Matt Boyd, a 2010 Knight, was a third-team All-American.

Moore led the Pac-12 with 12 victories, which places him in a tie for third nationally. He posted a 1.22 ERA, good for second in the league and finished with a 0.93 WHIP (walks plus hits per nine innings). He enters the postseason on a seven-game win streak and has allowed just two earned runs in his last 42 innings.

Boyd is 10-3, 2.09, with three complete games and 98 strikeouts. He was named the Pac-12's Pitcher of the Week twice and threw a one-hit shutout against Arizona State in March.

Moore was also named the Pacific-12 Conference Freshman of the Year, and a first-team all-star, on Wednesday. Boyd was also named a Pac-12 all-star.

They are two of six players with Knights connections to earn Pac-12 postseason honors. In addition to Moore and Boyd, Oregon State pitcher Ben Wetzler (2011) and catcher Jake Rodriguez (2009) and Oregon pitcher Jimmie Sherfy (2011) were first-team selections, and OSU pitcher Scott Schultz (2011) was honorable mention.

It's an 11 a.m. start to accommodate more than 1,700 area elementary school students, who will attend the game on field trips from their respective schools. The weather looks good so it should be a great day. Pacific University lefty Kyle Treadway, a 10-day signee, is our projected starter.

We begin the West Coast League season the following night with the opener of a three-game series at Wenatchee. Our starting rotation is Colin Feldtman, University of Portland, on June 5; Tom Zarosinski, George Fox, on June 6, and Jacob Schroeder, Washington State, on June 7. We then head to Cowlitz for three games on June 8-10.

CONCORDIA: Sophomore outfielder Blake Drake hit .367 (84-229) in 55 games, with 27 RBIs. Concordia's season is over.

DIXIE STATE: Sophomore infielder Kevin Kline hit .349 (53-152) in 44 games, with six homers and 40 RBIs. His season is over.

GEORGE FOX: Junior pitcher Tom Zarosinski was 4-4, 3.18 in 12 games, with 66 strikeouts in 76.1 innings. Sophomore pitcher Sean Eberhardt was 3-0, 3.14 in 13 games, with 10 strikeouts in 14.1 innings. GFU has finished its season.

TACOMA CC: Sophomore pitcher Brandon Choate, a Washington signee, was 1-2, 1.92 in 15 games, with five saves and 32 strikeouts in 28 innings. Sophomore Chad Michaud hit .280 (26-93) in 27 games, with a homer and 23 RBIs as a catcher and was 0-0, 0.00 in six games as a pitcher, with a save and eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Knights sign OSU recruit Kevin Flemer

Happy dreary Wednesday, everyone. Hopefully all this rain will clear out by the weekend and we'll have a nice dry Corvallis Regional and a dry Science and Art Day on Tuesday, our season opener.

The Knights have signed right-handed pitcher Kevin Flemer, a 6-foot-1, 210-pounder from St. Mary's College High School in Berkeley, Calif. He's an Oregon State signee from El Cerrito, Calif.

He will be a four-year letter winner for coach John Nelson, and he was rated as the No. 384 high school player by Perfect Game USA before the 2013 season. He played in the 2012 Area Code Games for the Oakland Athletics squad.

Kevin was first-team all-state in 2012 and was a Contra Costa Times East Bay top 100 athlete in 2011-12. He was first-team Tri-County Athletic League all-star in 2013, 2012 and 2011, the TCAL pitcher of the year as a sophomore and junior and an honorable mention selection as a freshman.

As a junior, Kevin hit .495 with five doubles, one triple, six homers and 39 RBIs. As a pitcher, he was 10-0 with a 1.37 ERA in 14 games, with 114 strikeouts in 68.1 innings. He hit .307 (3-20) and was 3-4, 1.88 as a sophomore, and was 4-4, 2.33 as a freshman.

He also lettered four years in football and was a second-team all-league selection as a quarterback his junior season. An older brother, Matt Flemer, pitched at California and is now playing for Asheville of the Class A South Atlantic League in the Colorado Rockies organization.

The Antelopes play St. Edward's (Texas) today in an elimination game. St. Edward's edged GCU and 2013 Knights pitcher Andrew Naderer 1-0 in each team's tournament opener.

Oregon State freshman pitcher Andrew Moore (2013) was nominated for Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for his 4-0 shutout of Washington State on Saturday that clinched a Pac-12 title for the Beavers, but he was not selected.

The Chicago White Sox traded alum Drew Garcia (2007) of UC Riverside to Colorado on Sunday for a player to be named later. Garcia was a 21st-round selection in the 2008 draft and hit .253 with 39 homers over his six years in the organization.

Garcia hit .222 over 24 games with triple-A Charlotte in the International League this season. He has been assigned to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in the triple-A Pacific Coast League.

The Mustangs are playing at the UCLA/Los Angeles Regional this week.

OREGON STATE: Freshman pitcher Andrew Moore is 12-1, 1.22 in 15 appearances, with a save and 55 strikeouts in 103 innings. Freshman pitcher Max Engelbrekt is 4-1, 1.46 in 19 appearances, with four saves and 17 strikeouts in 24.2 innings. Freshman infielder Gabe Clark is hitting .161 (5-31) in 15 games, with four RBIs. The Beavers host the Corvallis/Oregon State Regional this weekend.

Friday, Friday .... Friday is our favorite day

Yes, it's a TGIF here in CorVegas, where it has stopped raining (at least temporarily), perhaps in anticipation of this weekend's big series between Oregon State and the Washington State Cougars at Goss Stadium.

The Beavers can clinch their first Pac-12 championship since 2006 by winning twice. If they do alum/future Knights pitching arms will probably have a big say in it. Matt Boyd (2010) is tonight's starter; freshman sensation Andrew Moore (2013) goes on Saturday and Ben Wetzler (2011) starts on Sunday.

Closer Scott Schultz (2011) will be available to finish things off, and relievers Max Engelbrekt (2013), Brandon Jackson (2012) and Taylor Starr (2008, 2012) will be available if necessary.

The Cougars also have a future Knight, freshman reliever Jacob Schroeder (2013), ready to go if needed. At 6-foot-7, he's hard to miss.

So, let's hope the weather cooperates and we get nice days for some more great baseball at Goss Stadium.

Pitcher Andrew Naderer (2013) of Grand Canyon University was named the PacWest Conference Freshman of the Year, and a second-team all-star. He was 9-2 with a 2.52 ERA and had 80 strikeouts in 85.2 innings.

He also earned NCBWA All-West Region Honorable Mention honors. Among conference pitchers, he tied for second in wins, was fourth in strikeouts, tied for fourth in complete games, was eighth in innings pitched, and was one of just 13 PacWest pitchers with a complete-game shutout on the season.

Naderer and teammate Jorge Perez (2012-13) are at the Division II World Series in Cary, N.C. GCU plays St. Edward's of Texas on Sunday in its first game.

Bad news: We lose Kody Watts

Happy TGIF Eve, everyone.

It's a pretty dismal day here at the WWHQ, and the gray, cloudy, rainy, gloomy weather that's returned to Corvallis since Monday, and the inevitable letdown following yesterday's appearance by the Joe Beaver Show, are just part of the reason why.

We learned yesterday that University of Portland sophomore right-handed pitcher Kody Watts, our projected opening-night starter at Wenatchee on June 5, will instead be shut down for the summer and thus can't play for us.

Watts was 1-2, 4.59 in 16 games, with 21 strikeouts in 33.1 innings, and had excelled over the final 2/3 of the season after recovering from some arm problems.

We're obviously sorry to lose Kody, who joins two other projected Knights, Corban shortstop Marc Gallegos and Washington State pitcher Kellen Camus, on the sidelines.

But that's how it often goes in summer ball. And we still have three other great Pilots (pitcher Colin Feldtman and infielders Michael Lucarelli and Cody Lenahan) and two other Cougs (outfielder Nate Blackham and pitcher Jacob Schroder) on the roster.

Moore earns top Pac-12 honors

The rain has returned to our little slice of paradise; not especially thrilled about that.

But that's a good thing for local farmers who need the moisture, and besides, we've got lots of good news to report this morning so a little cloudburst isn't going to come even close to spoiling the day.

Future Knight Andrew Moore, a freshman at Oregon State, was named the Pacific-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday for his 2-hit, 9-0 shutout of Oregon this past Saturday. He improved to 11-1 and lowered his already-microscopic ERA to 1.34 with the gem, his second two-hit shutout of a superb freshman season. Here are complete details, from the Pac-12 website.

Moore was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week by the College Sports Madness website, and was named one of two national Pitchers of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a significant contributor to his team.

TACOMA CC: Sophomore pitcher Brandon Choate, a Washington signee, is 1-2, 2.05 in 14 games, with four saves and 30 strikeouts in 26.1 innings. Sophomore Chad Michaud is hitting .289 (26-90) in 26 games, with a homer and 23 RBIs as a catcher and is 0-0, 0.00 in five games as a pitcher, with a save and seven strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Knights' pitching coach Connor Lambert has the same job with TCC during the school year.

Happy Monday in Corvallis

We said before the weekend that future/alum Corvallis Knights would play a major role in the weekend's crucial Oregon State-Oregon series, and how right we were.

* Oregon's Jimmie Sherfy (2011) got the save on Friday's 3-0 win, which also featured another solid outing from losing pitcher Matt Boyd (2010) of Oregon State.

* OSU's Andrew Moore (2013) completely stifled the Ducks with a stellar complete-game two-hitter in a 9-0 thrashing in Game 2 on Saturday to even the series.

* And on Sunday, OSU's Ben Wetzler (2011) went 6.1 innings for the victory and relievers Jace Fry (2011) and Scott Schultz (2011) combined to pitch the ninth in the 12-2 blowout that won the series.

That made for a happy weekend in Corvallis, of course.

They play again at 5:35 p.m. Tuesday in a nonconference game at Goss Stadium.

Big weekend as well for 2013 Knights pitchers Andrew Naderer and Jorge Perez of Grand Canyon University. They each earned all-tournament honors as the Antelopes won the NCAA Division II St. George Regional to advance to the Division II College World Series in Cary, N.C.

Naderer and Perez each won a game to help GCU advanceto the finals against Chico State. They then combined and did not allow an earned run over seven innings in a 6-2 victory in the championship game.

GCU will play St. Edward's, the winner of the South Central Region, at 2 p.m. this Sunday. The tournament opens on Saturday, with Franklin Pierce facing Shippensburg and Minnesota State Mankato to face Grand Valley State. On the second day, Coker will faceoff against Tampa and GCU faces St. Edward's.

The double-elimination event runs through June 1, so their arrival in Corvallis could be delayed for a week or so. Still, they'll have plenty of time in Corvlalis this summer, and best of luck to them at nationals. Jorge, of course, also played for us in 2012.

Jupiter (A Florida State, Marlins) reliever James Nygren (2009) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, struck out one, and got the win on Sunday in a 1-0 victory over Palm Beach to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

Honorable mention goes to:

* Charlotte (AAA International, White Sox) third baseman Brent Morel was 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and an RBI in an 11-6 loss to Buffalo.

* Iowa (AAA Pacific Coast, Cubs) pitcher Nick Struck (2009) allowed two runs, had four strikeouts and got the win in a 7-3 victory over Tucson.

* Reading (AA Eastern, Phillies) first baseman Jim Murphy (2009) was 2-for-5 with an RBI in an 11-3 loss to Reading.

* South Bend (A Midwest, Diamondbacks) shortstop Carter Bell (2009) was 2-for-4 with an RBI in a 7-5 loss to Dayton.
