Knights Baseball Club, Inc. president Dan Segel announced the Corvallis Knights team awards for the 2015 season as voted on by Segel and Knights' coaches Brooke Knight, Connor Lambert and Dane Lund.First-team all-WCL utility man Nick Madrigal earned MVP honors and was named the team's top prospect.
WCL All-Star Game starter Slater Lee of Cal Poly earned the Knights' Top Pitcher honor, and all-WCL honorable mention outfielder Emilio Alcantar of Linn-Benton CC (pictured) was the recipient of the annual Joe Segel Hustle Award.
Madrigal started his college baseball career with a bang this past summer setting a team and WCL single-season steals record with 40 stolen bases while shining defensively at shortstop, second base and center field.
A 17th round draft pick in the 2015 MLB June draft by the Cleveland Indians, Madrigal forgo the pro ranks to play collegiately at Oregon State. For the Knights, he hit .303 with 20 RBIs and collected a team-high 178 at bats, 35 runs and 54 hits in WCL play.
Baseball America rated Madrigal as the eighth top prospect in the West Coast League.
Lee, a junior-to-be at Cal Poly, emerged as the Knights' ace, went 2-1 with a 2.56 ERA and earned all-WCL honorable mention honors.
Alcantar was a 10-day signee out of Linn-Benton CC and earned a spot on the club with his aggressive style of play. He led the Knights in WCL batting (.328) and RBIs (28) and stole 26 bases. His break-out summer not only earned Emilio all-WCL honorable mention honors, but a scholarship offer from NAIA national champion Lewis-Clark State College.
The scrappy junior-to-be left-handed hitting outfielder will return in 2016.
