Future Knight Pitcher Scott Schultz of OSU Earns Key Pac-10 Win.
April 10, 2011Frosh Right-Hander Tosses 5 Solid Innings of Relief vs. #5 Ranked Arizona State
Freshman right-hander Scott Schultz (pictured) of Oregon State kept the Beavers in the game yesterday vs. the Mighty Sun Devils of Arizona State. The future Knight, who hails from Gig Harbor, Washington, was touched up in the fifth after replacing former Knights' southpaw Josh Osich. Schultz gave up a three-run homer, but was masterful from there giving his the team the opportunity to erase what looked like an insurmountable 6-2 deficit at the time.OSU did just that, scrapped back and won the game on a walk-off walk in the bottom of the ninth giving Schultz the hard earned win vs. the #5 ranked Devils.
With the victory, OSU took the series and improved its Pac-10 mark to 4-1 and overall record to 23-7.
Schultz pitched 5 innings allowing only two hits and two runs while walking none and striking out 3.
Infielders Ryan Dunn, Tyler Smith and Carter Bell led the Beaver offense delivering key hits late in the game. All three collected two hits.
Smith played last summer for the Bend Elks. Dunn played for Bend in 2009 and is returning this summer.
Bell is a former Knight. Carter played briefly in Corvallis following his freshman year before having his season cut short due to a concussion.
Scott Schultz has made 8 appearances, 2 starts and logged 23 1/3 innings pitched for the Beavers, and is 2-0 with a 3.09 ERA. He will join today's starting pitcher, frosh southpaw Ben Wetzler, on the Kights 2011 roster.
Wetzler and the Beavers go for the sweep of ASU later this afternoon.
