May 29, 2009Sam Gaviglio Earns Win, Carter Bell Collects Three Hits
An unlikely pair of Beavers - freshmen starting pitcher Sam Gaviglio and infielder Carter Bell (pictured) - led Oregon State to a Regional opening 9-8 win vs. Texas A&M in Fort Worth, Texas. With the win, OSU faces TCU of the Mountain West Conference in the Horned Frogs' home park tomorrow evening.
Gaviglio earned his 10th win of the spring season as the right-hander from Ashland, Oregon pitched 5 2/3 innings of six-hit ball allowing only one run while striking out 6 Aggies.
While Sam held A&M in check, Carter Bell led the offense going 3 for 5 with a double, two runs scored and 2 RBI.
Both Gaviglio and Bell are playing with the Corvallis Knights this summer and were picked in the 2008 MLB draft by Tampa in the 40th round and San Francisco in the 22nd round, respectively.
Gaviglio continued to build on his freshman wins record at OSU (10-1) and lowered his ERA to 2.73. Over 18 appearances, 6 starts and 62 2/3 innings pitched, Sam has walked only 9 while striking out 55.
Bell, a native of Courtenay, British Columbia, raised his batting average to .294 thanks to a season-high three hits vs. Baseball America's pre-season #1 ranked team - Texas A&M. Over 51 at bats, Carter has banged out 3 doubles, hit one home run and collected 10 RBI.
