August 4, 2012Frosh Southpaw Twirls First No-No by Knight in West Coast League
Two-way sensation Greg Mahle of University of California, Santa Barbara (pictured after his masterpiece with his dad) made his first start as a Corvallis Knight memorable for his family visiting from California and the 1,379 in attendance on Friday night at Goss Stadium, as the frosh southpaw baffled the Cowlitz Black Bears tossing the Knights' first no-hitter in the West Coast League.Mahle earned the key divisional win and only allowed three walks and struck out 6. He faced just 30 batters and did not allow a single hit.
Greg also shined offensively collecting 4 hits and driving in two runs in the Knights' 14-0 shellacking of the Black Bears.
With the win, first-place Corvallis (28-21) clinched a playoff berth and gained a game on Cowlitz (23-26) and Klamath Falls (23-25) in the WCL West.
Mahle's no-hitter was the fourth in Knights' history. The last no-hitter was tossed by James Stanford of University of the Pacific on June 16, 2002. Stanford's gem was a 7-inning no-hitter (game one of a doubleheader) versus the Seattle Studs at Oslund Field at Mt. Hood CC.
The club's first no-hitter was twirled by southpaw Greg Williams in 1993 versus the Hermiston Black Sox in Hermiston, Oregon. Following that summer, Williams would sign with the Cleveland Indians. And, the second Knights' no-no on record was a combined no-hitter thrown by Rich Dorman and Jordan Hunt in 1999 against the Richmond Budgies in British Columbia, Canada. Both Dorman and Hunt pitched professionally with Dorman making it as far as AAA with the Mariners.
