Corvallis Knights owner Penny Knight was honored at the Oregon Sports Awards at the Tiger Woods Center on the Nike campus. The Oregon Sports Awards show Sunday honored the best performers from 2006 and also presented two long-time achievers with special merit awards; Bill Schonely, the former Portland Trail Blazers broadcaster, and Penny Knight.Knight, the club's owner since the team's inception in 1990, earned the merit award for her contributions to amateur baseball in the State and for her team's track record of developing collegiate student-athletes and winning. Penny has won three Portland City League championships and a summer semi-pro national championship, the 2004 NBC World Series, as the owner of the Aloha Knights, now the Corvallis Knights. She has also recorded 603 wins and had 68 of her players sign professional contracts over her 17 years sponsoring the team.
Knight's 2004 club shocked the baseball world by winning seven straight games at the 70th NBC World Series in Wichita, Kansas culminated by a 7-0 championship game victory vs. the mighty Alaska Baseball League champion Mat-su Miners. Penny's Knights were the first team to win the NBC from Oregon since the 1958 Drain Black Sox and the first to go undefeated at the tournament since Team USA in 1995.
She was instrumental in the club's relocation to Corvallis, Oregon and her support of the team continues to be strong. Knight is looking forward to an exciting inaugural season at Goss Stadium and to adding to her long list of achievements in amateur baseball.
