Knights Intact.
June 16, 2011Majority of Roster Reports This Week
The Corvallis Knights will field an almost-complete roster for the first time tonight as their remaining players report to Goss Stadium for the balance of the summer.
Foremost among the projected arrivals are catcher Corey Davis of Wright State; outfielder David Andriese (pictured) and pitcher Mitch Patito of UC Riverside, and pitcher Chris Mendoza of Santa Clara. They all played for last year's West Coast League West Division regular-season title team.
Augmenting that group are Big West Conference Freshman Pitcher of the Year Dylan Stuart of UC Riverside; four fresh arms from an Oregon State team that was eliminated from the NCAA Super Regionals including Adam Duke, Scott Schultz and Ben Wetzler; three players from Cal Poly, and a pitcher from Riverside (California) CC.
"We haven't played up to our expectations but with these reinforcements and three days off we are ready to get after it," Knights (3-5) coach Brooke Knight said.
"There's a lot of baseball left, and we certainly aren't panicking.
"David Andriese and Corey can really swing the bat," and should the Knights juice up and offense that averaged three runs and 6.6 hits in its first eight games.
"And the new arms will give us a great staff and a lot of options."
Davis hit .312 with eight homers and 40 RBIs for Wright State and was the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and a first-team All-Horizon League selection.
Andriese hit .307, with four homers and 30 RBIs, for the Highlanders.
The Knights open their four-game homestand at 6:40 p.m. today against the Portland Bucks of WCL Portland. Tom Zarosinski, an OSU freshman righty who redshirted in 2011, is the Knights' probable starter.
WCL Portland is a six-team affiliate league that plays at the University of Portland and at Mt. Hood Community College. The Bucks are coached by MHCC skipper Bryan Donahue; one of their players is ex-Knight Grant Fink, a first baseman who was released from his 10-day contract earlier this week.
Corvallis resumes WCL action against Bellingham on Friday and Saturday. The teams will play two seven-inning games starting at 6:05 p.m. on Friday, and a single game at 12:35 p.m. on Saturday before making way for the Reser's Oregon All-Star series.
Oregon State freshman righty Adam Duke and Stuart are Friday's scheduled starters. Righty Max Beatty of Pacific Lutheran (1-0, 1.98) will pitch Saturday's 12:35 p.m. series finale.
