Former Corvallis Knights pitcher Josh Osich, a redshirt junior at Oregon State, tossed the Beavers' first complete game no-hitter in 64 years on Saturday when he stymied UCLA 2-0 at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles.
Osich (pictured after the game) struck out 13 and retired the final 16 Bruins in order after allowing his only walk on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
He threw 121 pitches in the first complete game of his OSU career.
"Everything went the right way," Osich said. "It was an unbelievable game to be a part of. Parker (Berberet) did a great job behind the plate and the defense behind me was outstanding. They picked me up when they needed to and overall it was just a great game."
Osich was a first-team All-West Coast League selection for the 2008 Corvallis Knights and was the starter and pitcher of record in the team's 4-1 victory over Wenatchee in the final game of the WCL Championship Series.
Following his frosh season, he went 5-0 with a 1.96 ERA over 13 appearances, with 52 strikeouts in 46 innings for the WCL-champion Knights.
The summer of 2008 was Josh's last full collegiate season.
The hard-throwing southpaw from Boise, Idaho upstaged UCLA ace Trevor Bauer, considered by many to be the top collegiate pitcher in the country. Bauer struck out 15, but allowed two runs in the sixth inning.
Osich, who has missed most of the past two seasons while recovering from two arm surgeries, said he challenged himself just before the game.
"I told myself I was going to be better than (Bauer) today and I was going to go out and prove it," Osich said. "There was never any talk of me coming out."
The last complete-game no-hitter in OSU history was Fred Gallagher's 1-0 victory over Montana during the 1947 season. Josh's no-no was the first in Pac-10 play since Stanford's Jason Middleton no-hit the Bruins in 1994.
"I'm very proud of Josh," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "He was spot on, and his defense played incredibly well. This was an all-around great game and it was something special to be a part of."
Osich's big win gave OSU the series victory at UCLA and improved the #3-ranked Beavers overall record to 32-8 and Pac-10 mark to 12-2.
Josh improved his spring record to 6-1 and lowered his ERA to 2.77. Osich has held opponents to a paltry .199 batting average while striking out 58 over 11 starts and 55 1/3 innings pitched for OSU this season.
