Knights defeated 4-0 by Sweets on final at bat.
July 12, 2016Host Walla Walla capitalized on an error by pitcher Chase Kaplan in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Knights 4-0 in the opener of their WCL series at Borleske Stadium.
A one-out single and Kaplan's two-base throwing error on a pickoff attempt put a runner at third in a scoreless game in the home ninth. Two intentional walks then loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Coby Kauhaahaa hit the ball over the left-field fence to end the game.
However, Kauhaahaa was mobbed by teammates and was originally called out. However, he was subsequently credited with a grand slam.
Future Washington catcher Nick Kahle (pictured) had two infield singles to pace an offense that generated just three hits and did not get a runner to third base.
The Knights (26-12 all, 19-12 WCL, 1-3 second half) have lost 4 of their last 5 since clinching the first-half South Division title, and a playoff berth, on July 4.
Starter Cameron Bishop (UC Irvine), named to the South Division all-star team on Monday, allowed two hits and had seven strikeouts in five scoreless innings. He lowered his ERA to 0.41.
Reliever Aaron Pope (Dixie State) added two scoreless innings.
The series resumes at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. Righty Grant Goodman (0-0, 2.54) of San Francisco is the scheduled starter for Corvallis, opposed by lefty Easton Lucas (5-1, 1.67) of Pepperdine. It concludes on Thursday.
The next home game for the Knights is a 6:40 p.m. Friday matchup against the Cowlitz Black Bears.
