Haddeland shines as Knights prevail to sweep Rogues.
July 2, 2014Chris Haddeland stymied Medford through 6-plus innings and the Knights completed a series sweep with a 7-0 win on Wednesday before a sellout Fireworks Night gathering of 2,955.
The Knights (16-1) all, 14-10 WCL) took over first place in the South Division with their third win in a row over the reeling Rogues (12-9), who have now lost four in a row after zooming out to a quick start.
A rising senior at Linfield who earned Division III All-American honors this past spring, Haddeland quieted the Rogues on five hits until being lifted after three straight singles loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. He had three strikeouts, one walk, and threw 59 strikes in 98 pitches.
Reliever Jackson Lockwood got a strikeout and a flyout to end the threat, and then threw a perfect eighth. Stephen White added a scoreless ninth to complete the Knights' first shutout of the summer.
The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a passed ball and then broke the game open with three runs in the fourth. Jackson Soto doubled, Marc Gallegos singled, and hot-hitting Dalton Kelly tripled them home. Scott Quinlan's sacrifice fly scored Kelly, who had four hits on Tuesday, for a 4-0 advantage.
Gallegos sprinted home from second on Quinlan's fly ball to deep right in the sixth to make it 5-0 and the Knights tacked on two final runs in the seventh. Corvallis remained unbeaten in six home games against the second-year Rogues.
The Knights begin a three-game series at South Division rival Klamath Falls at 6:35 p.m. Thursday. Justin Calomeni (1-1, 1.14) is the projected starter for the Knights, opposed by Austin McGeorge (0-0, 9.90) of Long Beach State in a matchup of right-handers.
Wednesday's crowd of 2,955 was the second-largest in team history and upped the 2014 attendance to 21,958 in 17 openings, 665 more than 2013 through a corresponding number of home dates. The Knights drew a franchise-record 43,557 fans in 2013.
