Knights stunned 5-4 at Klamath Falls in opener.
July 24, 2015Left fielder Jes Staples (pictured) had four hits and reached base safely in all five plate appearances on Friday night in a 5-4 loss to the Klamath Falls Gems.
The Gems (9-31 WCL) erased a 4-0 deficit with four runs in the fourth and then took advantage of two walks in the ninth to upend the Knights (26-19 all, 21-19 WCL). The winning run scored on a two-out single by Austin Fisher; it was the third consecutive walk-off road loss for Corvallis.
Staples (Bellarmine) had three singles, a double, a run and two RBIs. Christian Donahue (Oregon State) also doubled, singled, scored and drove in a run for the Knights.
Starter Alex Nesbitt (Washington) allowed four runs and had seven strikeouts in seven innings. All the Gems' runs came in the fourth, when the Knights made two errors to extend the inning, enabling the Gems to tie the game on a 3-run homer by Jesse Hilyard.
The series continues at 6:35 p.m. Saturday. Slater Lee (1-1, 2.62) of Cal Poly will start for the Knights, opposed by Michael McCall (2-3, 5.19) of Oregon Tech in a matchup of right-handers.
The series concludes at 5:05 p.m. Sunday; lefty Cole Doherty (2-1, 5.64) of Portland will go for the Knights, opposed by righty Josh Overstreet (0-0, 10.12) of Lane CC. The Knights are idle on Monday and then begin a three-game home series with the Gems on Tuesday night.
