Kelowna wins nightcap to split pair with Knights.

A two-run double by shortstop Nate Roberts (pictured) powered the Knights to a 4-2 win in game one but Kelowna rallied to win game two, 3-1, to split the twin-bill.

The Knights (23-19 WCL, 25-19 overall) remained in first place in the West Division. But they missed a golden opportunity to add to their lead by losing the nightcap, as Bend lost at Bellingham for the second night in row.

After winning game one, Corvallis scored in the first inning of game two to take a 1-0 lead and seemed poised to sweep and regain some momentum heading into the West Coast League all-star break. Connor Hofmann, Greg Mahle and Caleb Whalen each singled with one out and Hofmann scored the Knights' first first-inning run since June 19 on an error.

However, they had just two hits from that point on. Several baserunning errors prevented them from adding on and changing the game's complexion and the hard-hitting Falcons capitalized.

Kelowna (24-17 WCL) then scored single runs in the fifth off starter AJ Burke to tie. It added single runs in the sixth and seventh off reliever Taylor Starr for the split; all three were scored with two outs.

The Falcons won the series 2-1, and took the season series 5-1 for the first time since the 2005 inception of the WCL. They swept the Knights in British Columbia on July 6-7 for their first-ever series win over Corvallis.

In the opener, the Knights were hitless and trailed 2-0 through four before rallying. Austin Barr, Nick Torres and Matt Nylen hit singles for one run. After a sacrifice, Roberts of Seattle University doubled to left field on a 3-2 pitch to score Torres and Nylen for a 3-2 lead.

"We came in the dugout and said, 'We have to get the energy up, we've got to get the guys going,' " said Roberts, who has four RBIs in three games since returning to the lineup from a wrist injury on Friday. "Our hitters stepped up and I just happened to be in position with runners in scoring position.

"I got my pitch, and drove the ball to left field."

Mahle opened the sixth with a single and scored a key insurance run when reliever Cord Cockrell threw wildly on Marc Gallegos's sacrifice bunt, and then again on an attempted pickoff.

Kelowna scored single runs in the second and third off starter Dylan Stuart, but from that point on the UC Riverside lefty allowed just one hit and two baserunners over the final four innings. He had four strikeouts and two pickoffs in his longest outing of the summer.

Corvallis hosts the WCL Portland Ports at 5:15 p.m. Sunday in a nonleague makeup of a June 22 rainout on All Family Vision Care $1,000 Kids Dash for Cash night. The Knights resume WCL play at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday against Klamath Falls at Goss Stadium.
