Knights blank Cowlitz 2-0 before sellout crowd of 1,863 at Story Field.
August 10, 2011Kyle Hart, Chase Johnson, Jimmie Sherfy (pictured), Eric Young and Mitch Patito combined to shutout the Black Bears.
The Knights victory ended the Black Bears season. Cowlitz needed to win to advance to the WCL West Divisional Series as the division's second-place club. Instead, Corvallis will face its archrival the Bend Elks, who clinched its berth thanks to the Black Bears loss, with the series opening at Vince Genna Stadium this Friday night.
Corvallis struck early scoring two runs in the first. The Knights scored first on a wild pitch and then Wright State catcher Corey Davis delivered a bloop RBI single to put Corvallis up 2-0.
The score would not change despite Cowlitz mounting several threats.
Starter Kyle Hart of Redlands pitched 4 innings and struck out 6. Sophomore-to-be Chase Johnson of Cal Poly replaced Hart and earned the win.
Jimmie Sherfy of Oregon, Eric Young of Delaware and Mitch Patito of UC Riverside would finish things off for the WCL West Champs.
Patito earned the save pitching a perfect ninth.
With the win, Corvallis finishes the regular season with a 37-17 record.
The Knights will travel to Bend on Friday, and return home for game two on Saturday, and game three on Sunday if necessary.
Saturday's home game starts at 6:40 pm. Goss Stadium gates open at 6 pm.
