Trentacosta shines but Knights lose 12-inning heartbreaker at Bend, 3-2.

Corvallis reliever Mark Trentacosta (pictured) escaped two late jams to prolong Friday night's game.

But the Knights' early-season road offensive woes continued and they dropped a 3-2, 12-inning decision to the Bend Elks before a crowd of 1,879 at Vince Genna Stadium.

Corvallis (2-4) has now scored three or fewer runs in all four of its road games and is 1-3 away from Goss Stadium. The Knights had only three hits on Friday.

"We are just not swinging well," Knights coach Brooke Knight said. "We walked too many batters tonight (12), but we pitched well enough to win if we could have been more productive offensively."

Bend's (2-2) Brandons Snyder singled on a 1-2 pitch off Knights' reliever Justin Hepner with two outs and the bases loaded in the 12th to break the deadlock. A leadoff single and two walks with two outs set the stage for Snyders walk-off hit.

The Elks squandered numerous chances to win in the first 11 innings before breaking through in the 12th. They left 16 runners on base and left the bases full in the ninth and 10th innings.

Griffin Boyd had two RBIs for the Knights, on a bases-loaded groundout in the sixth and a two-out single in the eighth. Both erased one-run Bend leads.

A UC Irvine redshirt in 2011, Trentacosta prolonged the game by pitching out of bases-loaded jams in the ninth and 10th innings.

In the ninth, reliever Jimmie Sherfy walked the bases full with one out before Trentacosta came in. He struck out the next two Elks to retire the side; the second strikeout was on a 3-2 pitch to end a 10-pitch battle with Tyler Christian.

The Elks also loaded the bases in the 10th but Trentacosta again ended the threat with a strikeout.

Corvallis starter Max Beatty had his second strong effort of the season, giving up two runs and two hits in 5.2 innings. However, his two wild pitches led to Bend runs.

Former Oregon Stater Nick Stiltner started for Bend, allowed two hits in seven innings and left with a 2-1 lead the bullpen blew. He was not involved in the decision.

The series resumes at 6:35 p.m. Saturday. The scheduled starters are right-handers Chris Johnson (0-0, 0.00) for the Knights and Jason Wilson (0-0, 0.00) for the Elks.
