Osich, Baron and Starr combine to blank Bellingham 1-0. Knights take first game of series with Bells.
July 11, 2008Southpaw Josh Osich (pictured) of Oregon State tossed six shutout innings to earn the win. The frosh from Boise, Idaho allowed only three hits while walking three and striking out 6. Osich lowered his ERA to 1.53, recorded his first win as a Knight, and now has 18 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings pitched.
Liam Baron of Linn-Benton CC held Bellingham scoreless in the 7th and 8th setting up closer Taylor Starr of OSU for a save opportunity.
Starr came through again for the Knights, earning his league leading 5th save.
Junior catcher Alex Burg of Washington State was the star of the game as Burg threw out 4 would-be base stealers.
Richie Jimenez of Riverside CC scored the game's only run in the third inning. Jimenez doubled with one out, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a ground ball to third base by Doug Cherry of University of Washington.
The Knights' offense has scored only 2 runs in 3 of its 4 games on this road trip, but fortunately Corvallis pitching has tossed two shutouts and the Knights have collected 3 road wins.
Corvallis has won 11 of its last 12 games.
The Bells and Knights play game two of their series Saturday night at Joe Martin Stadium. Junior pitcher James McLaughlin of San Diego State is the probable starter for Corvallis.
