Lockwood's gem powers Knights by AppleSox 2-1.
June 28, 2014Corvallis pitcher Jackson Lockwood (pictured) allowed one run in six innings and Brandon Choate got his third save as Corvallis topped Wenatchee 2-1 on Saturday to even their WCL series.
A junior-to-be at Portland, Lockwood (4-1) had two strikeouts and no walks in his longest outing of the summer. He is 2-0, 0.82 in his last two starts; he threw five shutout innings in a victory over Kelowna on June 21 in his previous appearance.
"All my pitches were working for me," said Lockwood, now 4-1, 3.00 in seven appearances. "I threw a first-pitch strike almost every time. When I can do that I am usually very successful."
Relievers Merrick Patito of Chaffey College, Harrison McGhee of Concordia and Brandon Choate of Washington protected a slim 2-1 advantage with an inning of scoreless relief apiece. Choate got his second save in three days against Wenatchee with a 1-2-3 ninth, highlighted by strikeouts of the final two batters. He has three saves and a win in six games.
Corvallis (13-9 all, 11-9 WCL) halved the series with the win and can split the season series by prevailing on Sunday. The AppleSox won 2 of 3 in Wenatchee (12-8 WCL) June 23-25.
Aided by two errors, the Knights scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit. Michael Lucarelli of Portland was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to knock home the tying run; Tim Rausch of Western Oregon followed with a sacrifice fly for the eventual winning tally.
Left fielder Dane Lund of OSU had two of Corvallis's three hits. Logan Ice's double was the only other safety for the Knights and none of those hits figured in the scoring.
