Snodgrass, bullpen combine on win at Kitsap.
July 22, 2014Jason Snodgrass (pictured) went six scoreless innings and Corvallis won its third game in a row on Tuesday night with a 5-0 victory at Kitsap.
A rising senior righthander at Concordia University in Portland, Snodgrass spaced four hits in his stint and benefited from three double plays. He struck out four and stretched his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 11.2 over his last two starts, a span that has lowered his ERA from 5.00 to 2.18.
The Knights (28-13 all, 24-13 WCL) won for the 13th time in their last 16 WCL games and maintained their two-game lead over Bend in the South Division pennant race.
Marc Gallegos (Corban) and Grant Melker (San Diego) had three hits each; Dalton Kelly (UC Santa Barbara) tripled twice and had two RBIs and Jackson Soto (West Albany, Oregon State) singled twice and had an RBI for the Knights.
After failing to capitalize on chances in the first and second innings, Corvallis jumped ahead 3-0 in the third on an RBI triple by Kelly, an RBI single by Soto and a sacrifice fly by Scott Quinlan (UC Santa Barbara).
Back-to-back doubles by Michael Lucarelli (Portland) and Melker made it 4-0 in the sixth. Melker singled and scored on another Kelly triple to make it 5-0 in the ninth.
Relievers Merrick Patito (Chaffey), Joey Wise (Grand Canyon) and Derrick Mahlum (PLU) each pitched a scoreless inning to complete the shutout, the second by the Knights in their last three games. They have allowed just one run in their last 34 innings over their last four games.
The series resumes at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday. Right-hander Chris Haddeland of Linfield (3-2, 2.65) is the scheduled starter for the Knights, opposed by righty Jerome Byndloss of Olympic College (0-3, 8.56) for Kitsap.
