Knights prevail 3-2 in 10 on another Whalen walk-off.

Caleb Whalen (pictured) of Portland lined a walk-off RBI single into center field with one out in the 10th inning to give Corvallis the thrilling comeback win.

If you think you've read something similar to that before, it's because you have. Whalen's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Knights a similar 3-2 walk-off win in Tuesday's series opener.

Nate Blackham of Washington State started the winning rally by legging out an infield single up the middle with one out. He then stole second, and scored when Whalen rocketed a 2-2 pitch from reliever Kyle Myers up the middle.

The speedy Blackham hesitated briefly going to third, making sure the ball was through. But he easily beat the relay home and the Knights (17-5 overall, 16-5 WCL) regained a 6.5-game lead over Bend (9-11 WCL) in the West Division.

"When I got up I was glad Nate had gotten moved over to second," said Whalen, who had both Knights' RBIs to boost his team-leading total to 18. "I really wanted to repeat Tuesday night and help us score again.

"It's pretty insane. I think I'd only had one other walk-off hit in my life, so to have two in one series is great."

Whalen's clutch hit ended another pitching duel between the teams, whose staffs played can-you-top-this throughout the series.

Corvallis starter Max Beatty of PLU had two strikeouts and allowed two runs and five hits in six innings, his longest outing of the summer. Relievers Kyle Hart (.2) of Redlands, Taylor Starr (2.1) of Oregon State and winner Greg Mahle (1.0) of UC Santa Barbara kept the Bells off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Bellingham starter Adam Gunn allowed seven hits and two runs over seven innings in his first appearance of the summer. Myers went the rest of the way. Bellingham allowed just six runs in the three games but still lost the series.

Whalen's RBI double scored Blackham in the third to put the Knights ahead 1-0. Bellingham scored twice in the fourth to go ahead, but Nick Torres of Cal Poly tied the game in the sixth when he scored from second on a single and an outfield error.

Both teams had subsequent scoring chances but couldn't cash in until the Knights broke through in the 10th.

Blackham had three hits, two runs and a stolen base. Whalen and Marc Gallegos of Corban had two hits each for the Knights, who rebounded after being one-hit in a 6-0 loss on Wednesday.

The Knights open a four-game home series with Kitsap (6-20) at 6:40 p.m. Friday. Right-hander Trevor Frank (0-0, 0.00) of UC Riverside is their scheduled starter; Kitsaps rotation has not been announced.

Monday's 7:15 p.m. series finale is our annual OSU Federal Credit Union Fireworks Night.
