Knights' dynamic Grand Canyon duo stymies Rogues.
June 20, 2013Starter Andrew Naderer (pictured) of Grand Canyon University held Medford to one hit over five innings and GCU teammate Jorge Perez got a two-inning save on Thursday night as Corvallis topped Medford 5-1.
All told, three Corvallis pitchers stymied Medford on four hits and the Knights broke open a close game with three runs in the ninth. The Knights (9-7 overall, 8-7 WCL) won the final two games of the series to post their third straight series win. They are 6-2 in their last eight WCL games to move into third place in the South Division.
A PacWest Conference all-star as a freshman, Naderer struck out six in his first start to get the win. Perez closed it out with two scoreless innings to notch his fourth save in as many chances.
Cody Lenahan, Blake Drake and Dane Lund had two hits each to pace a 10-hit attack. The Knights had 25 hits while winning the final two games of the series after being held to three while losing Tuesday night's opener.
Corvallis went up 1-0 in the first inning when Drake scored on the back end of a double steal. The Knights doubled the lead in the fourth on consecutive two-out doubles by Lenahan and Chris Rabago. Lenahan now has at least one extra-base hit in his last seven games.
Run-scoring singles by Nate Blackham and Peter Van Gansen in the ninth gave the Knights two insurance runs. A third scored on a wild pitch for a 5-1 advantage and Perez set the Rogues (5-10 WCL) down in order in the home half. He has not allowed a run in 5.1 innings in four games.
The Knights open a three-game home series with the Klamath Falls Gems at 6:40 p.m. Friday on Cowbell Night, sponsored by Linn Benton Tractor. Lefty Elliot Surrey (1-0, 0.00) of UC Irvine is their scheduled starter.
