Corvallis beats Spokane 6-2 before 757 fans at Goss.
July 24, 2007Jim Murphy of WSU hit a first-inning grand slam and fellow Cougar Matt Way earned his fifth win. The Knights took game one of its series with Spokane by scoring early off Hawk starter Kraig Sitton of OSU. Sitton walked the first three Knights he faced and then gave up a monster grand slam to Corvallis slugger Jim Murphy.
"I just waited until he had to throw a fastball," said Murphy. "I got a good swing and it was nice to score."
"They helped us a lot by walking us," said head coach Matt Dorey. "4 hits and you win, you have to be happy with that." Dorey continued, "We haven't had a big hit lately, and we got that tonight."
Way tossed 7 innings and gave up only two runs while striking out 8 to improve his overall record to 5-0. Brad Kidd and Greg Peavey threw a scoreless eighth and ninth, respectively, to close the Hawks out.
Corvallis only mustered 4 hits on the night, but the Knights big first inning was all they needed to gain a half game on Kitsap.
With the win, Corvallis is 29-15 overall and 21-13 in league.
