Chase Johnson shines as Knights end tailspin against Falcons.
July 6, 2011Corvallis starter Chase Johnson of Cal Poly went six innings and earned his first win of the summer in a 5-2 victory at Kelowna.
Johnson struck out seven, walked none, and allowed four hits and one earned run. Ben Wetzler threw two perfect innings and Mark Trentacosta finished with a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save.
Johnson, Wetzler and Trentacosta combined to retire the final 15 Falcons in order.
The Knights (17-12, 15-12 WCL) moved to within one-half game of first-place Bend in the West Division with their first victory since July 1. The Elks were idle on Thursday.
Corvallis broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning when Kramer Scott's double drove in Jimmy Allen, who was hit by a pitch with one out. Sean Myrom followed with his second RBI single of the night for a 4-2 advantage.
Myrom doubled, singled twice and had two RBIs as the Knights broke loose for four doubles and 11 hits. Trent Oleszczuk doubled, singled twice and scored and Corey Davis doubled, singled and scored.
Rain delayed the game by about 30 minutes but the Knights took a quick 2-0 lead once it started. Myrom had an RBI single in the first and Corey Moore walked with the bases loaded in the second.
The series resumes at 6:35 tonight. Chris Johnson (2-0, 2.60) is the Knights' projected starter; Kyle Hart (2-0, 1.93) will make his first start in Saturday's 6:35 p.m. series finale. David Otterman (2-1, 2.53) and Ethan Miller (0-2, 4.23) are Kelowna�s probables.
