Farley's sac fly powers Knights over Medford, 9-8.

Third baseman Kevin Farley's (pictured) 12th-inning sacrifice fly to center field gave Corvallis a thrilling 9-8 victory over Medford on Monday night.

Farley's one-out fly ball scored Grant Melker of San Diego to end the four-hour, four-minute marathon. Farley of University of Portland entered the game in the 11th and it was his only plate appearance in the Knights' (19-11 all, 17-11 WCL) longest contest of the summer.

The Knights won for the sixth time in their last seven games and now lead second-place Bend by one game and third-place Medford by 1.5 games in the South Division pennant race. Corvallis improved to 7-0 all-time at Goss Stadium against Medford (14-11 WCL) with its fourth home win over the Rogues in 2014.

Grant Melker led off the decisive 12th with a single off reliever Shane Quarterley. He stole second, was sacrificed to third, and tagged up on Farleys high fly ball to medium-deep center. He slid home well ahead of the throw from Christian Cox.

First baseman Dalton Kelly continued his torrid hitting. A rising junior at UC Santa Barbara, Kelly tripled, doubled, scored once, had two sacrifice bunts and drove in four runs. He is hitting .500 (12-24) in his last six games, with three homers, two triples and 12 RBIs and has tripled his averaged from .111 on June 30 to .333.

Designated hitter Kevin Kline of Dixie State doubled three times and added two RBIs to raise his league-leading total to 30 in 28 games. Marc Gallegos also doubled and singled as the Knights erupted for six extra-base hits.

The Knights trailed 2-0 early but scored six times in the fourth to pull in front. Jackson Soto singled, Gallegos doubled him to third and both scored when Medford starter Brandon Erickson uncorked two wild pitches.

Then, walks to Michael Lucarelli and Melker sandwiched Logan Ice's single, loading the bases for Kelly, the Knights' hottest hitter coming into the game. He roped a triple into the right-fielder corner to clear the bases for a 5-2 lead.

Kline followed with a double to score Kelly for a 6-2 advantage. Medford drew within 6-4 in the top of the sixth but Corvallis replied with two of their own in the bottom half on successive doubles by Kelly and Kline to re-establish control, 8-4.

However, the Knights could not protect that lead and Medford forced extra innings with two in the seventh and two more in the ninth. Relievers Ted Hammond, Stephen White and Austin Sodders finally shut down the Rogues over the final 3.2 innings; Sodders pf Riverside City College pitched two perfect frames for the win.

Corvallis starter Angel Landazuri of UC Riverside blanked the Rogues on two hits through seven innings on July 2 in his last start, but was not as effective on Monday. He allowed four runs on nine hits through 5.1 innings, left with a 6-4 advantage but once again was denied the victory.

The series resumes at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday. The projected starters are righty Chris Haddeland (2-2, 2.91) of Linfield for the Knights, opposed by Cox (0-1, 3.77), a lefty from Nebraska who does double duty for the Rogues.

Monday's crowd of 718 upped the 2014 attendance to 22,676 in 18 openings. Thats 384 more than 2013, when the Knights drew a franchise-record 43,557 fans, through a corresponding number of home dates.
