Nylen's throw helps save win over BlueJackets.

Corvallis center fielder Matt Nylen (pictured) threw out the tying run at home to end the sixth inning and the bullpen held the lead in a 3-2 win over Kitsap.

The Knights led 3-2 with two outs in the sixth when Kitsap's Spencer Brann tried to score from second on a hard single by Claude Johnson. Nylen aggressively charged the ball and his on-line throw to catcher Corey Davis beat Brann by three steps.

"I checked him at third and I knew I had some time," said Nylen, a Mt. Hood CC sophomore who has earned a full-time position after starting the season as a 10-day signee. "I knew I had to make an accurate throw.

"It wasn't my hardest throw, but it got there."

Brann didnt even attempt to slide and was tagged out easily to end the inning.

That putout ended starter Max Beatty's (4-1) night. He allowed two runs (one earned) and six hits over six innings, with eight strikeouts, in his second win over Kitsap in 2011.

Reliever Mitch Patito then went two innings for the hold, and closer Mark Trentacosta finished for his third save in the last five games and his seventh overall.

The Knights (21-12, 19-12 WCL) doubled their lead in the West Division of the West Coast League to two games, as second-place Bend lost to Cowlitz. It was the Knights' fifth straight win overall, a streak that started after they were swept by Bend and lost 2 of 3 to Wenatchee.

"We're really taking in what (skipper Brooke Knight) is talking about," Nylen said. "We're putting the ball in play and executing."

Kitsap scored twice in the second to end a 20-inning scoreless streak against the Knights. But Corvallis pulled even in the fourth on consecutive singles by David Armendariz, Ryan Gorton, Jimmy Allen and David Andriese, and Corey Davis's sacrifice fly.

Corey Moore scored the winner in the fifth when he walked with two outs, stole second, and came home on Armendariz's double to left field. Armendariz and Gorton had two hits apiece.

The BlueJackets (14-18) lost their 10th consecutive game, a nosedive that began against Beatty and the Knights in Silverdale, Wash., on June 27. Corvallis is 5-0 vs. the BlueJackets in 2011 and has a seven-game series winning streak over the past two years.

The series concludes at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday; it's Mike Parker Night, hosted by Papa's Pizza. The award-winning Knights/Oregon State broadcaster will throw out the first pitch, and the first 250 fans will receive a free slice of Papa's Pizza.

The projected starters are right-handers Chase Johnson (1-1, 3.86) for the Knights and Blake Golding (2-2, 2.23) for Kitsap.

Corvallis is idle on Thursday and begins a three-game series against Kelowna on Friday. The San Diego Chicken will perform on Saturday.
