Fireworks Night draws 1,308. Knights beat East leading Moses Lake Pirates 1-0.
July 1, 2007Southpaw Matt Way of Washington State tossed 7 innings of shutout ball to earn the win before a record crowd. Goss Stadium was jumping on Fireworks Night as the Corvallis Knights set a franchise single-game home attendance mark of 1,308.
The home team prevailed thanks to aggressive base running by junior outfielder Braden Wells of Oregon State. Wells singled with one out in the sixth, advanced to second on a balk, advanced to third on a ground out to second by catcher Erik Ammon and scored when Moses Lake starter Tyler Rogers balked a second time in the inning. Wells forced the issue at third faking a steal of home before coaxing the balk. That was the only run Way and the bullpen would need.
"It was a fake out," said Wells. "I'm glad it worked though, otherwise I would have been out."
"I'm really happy to be here," continued Wells. Braden recently returned from Omaha with his fellow Oregon State national champs. "It's nice to play at home and in the good weather. Crowds like this are nice to come home to."
The Knights pen came up big as Brad Kidd of BYU retired the two batters he faced after Way gave up a lead-off single in the eighth and was lifted for the right-hander from Salem, Oregon. Danny Bibona of UC Irvine recorded the final out of the 8th with a strikeout and closer Kyle Cruikshank of Golden West College slammed the door in the 9th to earn his third save of the season.
"Matt Way is our ace and it's nice to have a strong staff behind him, but also have that one guy,' said head coach Matt Dorey.
Corvallis has now won four straight vs. the Pirates. Moses Lake still owns the best record in the league at 12-4 and has only lost this season to the Knights.
Corvallis improves to 15-8 overall and 10-6 in the WCCBL. With Kitsap's 2-0 loss to Bellingham tonight, Corvallis moves into a first place tie in the West with the BlueJackets.
Moses Lake and Corvallis get back after it Wednesday, July 4 at Goss. The independence day game starts at 5:05 pm.
