Davis Duren of Oklahoma State collects 2 of Knights' 4 hits as Corvallis beats Mountaineers 3-2.
June 11, 2008Brooke Knight recorded his first collegiate win as a head coach. The Corvallis Knights picked up its first victory of the 2008 season by beating its affiliate team the Gresham Mountaineers 3-2 at Oslund Field on the campus of Mt. Hood Community College.
Corvallis took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning on Davis Duren's RBI single. Sophomore third baseman Billy Clontz of Mt. Hood CC plated the Knights' second run as he followed Duren's base hit with a RBI ground out scoring Travis Anderson of Feather River College. Clontz would later score Duren in the fifth inning to give Corvallis a 3-0 advantage as Duren and Clontz hammered back-to-back two-out doubles to right-centerfield.
The Knights held the lead and Coach Knight registered his first collegiate win as a field manager and first victory as the skipper of the Knights.
Corvallis starts league play tomorrow night in Bremerton vs. division rival Kitsap. Jon Berger of San Diego State is the probable starter for the Knights.
Matt Wyckoff of George Fox University joined the team in Gresham and picked up his first hit of the season and also closed the game pitching a scoreless ninth to earn a save. Wyckoff earned second-team All-WCCBL honors last summer with the Knights.
Duren, Anderson, Dean Green of Oklahoma State, Liam Baron of Linn-Benton CC and Richie Jimenez of Riverside CC also made their Knights debuts vs. the Mountaineers.
