Corvallis plays the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes to a 4-4 tie.
June 17, 2007Garrett Baker of Salem-Keizer blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to thwart the Knights Father's Day upset hopes. Corvallis took a two run lead in the top half of the 9th as the Knights scored two runs all with two outs. Leftfielder Steven Sultzbaugh of Weatherford (TX) College singled to right with two down and scored all the way from first base on Austin Pearce's two-out RBI single to left-center. Sultzbaugh was running on the pitch to Pearce and was waved home by third base coach Matt Dorey on Pearce's flare. The aggressive play gave the Knights its first lead 3-2. Pearce went to second on the throw to the plate and scored on Clayton Shaw's sharp single to right to put the Knights up 4-2.
In the bottom half of the inning, Coach Dorey turned to Kyle Cruikshank of Golden West College to close the door on the 2006 Northwest League Champions. Cruikshank gave up a bloop single and two-run blast before retiring the game's final three batters. Salem's skipper Steve Decker called an end to the exhibition game after 9 complete innings.
Salem native Mike Cusick of Western Oregon made his Knights debut tossing the first three innings. Bryant Hollingsworth of Riverside CC threw the next four innings and did not give up a run. Mike Koons pitched a scoreless eighth and Cruikshank tossed the ninth.
Offensively, the Knights banged out 9 hits as Mark Samuelson of UC Riverside, Matt Wyckoff of George Fox, Jake Roy of Dakota Wesleyan, Nick Akins of RCC, Josh Hogan of Mt. Hood CC, Austin Pearce of Notre Dame and Shaw of UP all collected a hit while Sultzbaugh went 2 for 2.
The Knights scored 2 in the fourth to tie the game. Matt Wyckoff's double off the right-centerfield fence was the big blow. Cruikshank plated the Knights first run on a sac fly and Wyckoff scored from second on an error by the Volcanoes shortstop on a Jake Roy single.
The Knights are now 0-2-1 vs. Salem-Keizer. The Volcanoes beat the Knights in their previous two father's day meetings by scoring late and breaking tie games in the eighth. Salem rallied again this year with a two-run uprising in the ninth denying the Knights the victory over the San Francisco Giants Short-Season Class A club.
Corvallis returns to league play on Tuesday at Goss as the Knights welcome the Bellingham Bells for a three-game set. Bellingham took two of three at Wenatchee this past weekend.
Sunday's game was the Volcanoes home opener.
Knights' alum Eric Stolp of the University of the Pacific pitched a scoreless 5th inning for the Volcanoes. Stolp pitched for the 2003 Knights club.
