Drake, Corvallis are double trouble for Black Bears.
June 16, 2013Right fielder Blake Drake (pictured) doubled in his final three at-bats and the Knights pounded out eight two-baggers overall in a 5-3 win over Cowlitz on Sunday before 1,018 fans at Goss Stadium.
A junior-to-be at Concordia University in Portland, Drake doubled in the fifth, drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a two-out double in the sixth and then doubled and scored a valuable insurance run in the eighth to pace a 12-hit attack.
It was the fourth straight win for the Knights (7-5 overall, 6-5 WCL), who assumed uncontested control of third place in the South Division. It also clinched a series win, their second in a row after opening the season with consecutive 2-1 series losses at Wenatchee and Cowlitz.
"We pitched well and hit well, and our defense was good," Drake said, save for the fifth, when two errors and a passed ball gave the Black Bears (5-6 WCL) two unearned runs and a temporary 3-2 advantage. "We just had a lot of big hits tonight."
Shortstop Seth Heck doubled twice and had an RBI; catcher Chris Rabago doubled, singled and scored; outfielder Joe Duffin had an RBI double and third Cody Lenahan also doubled for the Knights. Lenahan has an extra-base hit in his past three games.
Lefty Devon Barker wasn't as effective as in his previous start on June 9, when he no-hit the Black Bears for 8.2 innings in Longview before giving up a single. But he went seven innings, spaced eight hits, allowed just one earned run and had two strikeouts to improve to 2-0.
Closer Jorge Perez notched his third save in as many chances with two hitless innings. He has not allowed a run in 3.1 innings over three appearances; he also saved Barker's aforementioned 1-0, 1-hit win.
The series concludes at 6:40 p.m. Monday at Goss Stadium. Oregon sophomore-to-be Jared Priestley will make his Knights debut as their starter, opposed by Cowlitz lefty Jon Bjorklund.
