Zarosinski quiets AppleSox in 6-2 Corvallis victory.
June 6, 2013Ten-day signee Tom Zarosinski (pictured) made a strong bid for a full-time position on Thursday night by pitching the Knights to a 6-2 victory over host Wenatchee.
A senior-to-be at George Fox University, Zarosinski pitched 8.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He threw 70 strikes in 111 pitches, struck out eight and had four walks, the last of which led to his removal with one out to go for a complete game.
Zarosinski allowed just one hit in the final five innings. Reliever Brandon Choate got the final out on a 3-pitch strikeout.
Second baseman Stephen Nogosek singled twice, doubled, stole a base and scored twice to lead the Knights (2-1, 1-1 WCL), who scored twice in the sixth and twice more in the ninth to snap a 2-2 standoff. Corvallis had eight hits, walked nine times and stole nine bases, but left 14 on base and never could quite separate until the final inning.
Grant Melker and Cody Lenahan had the go-ahead RBIs in the sixth. Nogosek scored on a wild pitch and Michael Lucarelli drove in the final insurance run in the ninth. Melker had three steals, Kevin Kline two.
The Knights didn't capitalize on early chances and trailed 2-0 after three innings. However, two-out RBI singles by Nate Blackham in the fourth and Gus Craig in the fifth drew them even.
A rematch of the 2012 WCL Championship finals won 2-1 by the AppleSox, the series concludes at 7:05 p.m. Friday. Washington State freshman right-hander Jacob Schroeder is the Knights' scheduled starter.
Corvallis then plays at Cowlitz on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Its WCL home opener is set for 6:35 p.m. June 12 against the Kitsap BlueJackets at Goss Stadium on Big League Chew Opening Night presented by AmeriTrade.
