Knights blowout WCL Portland Lobos 23-3 in non-league game at Goss Stadium.

Corvallis native Thomas McCarthy (pictured) of Feather River College went 4-for-6 with 5 runs scored and two RBI as the Knights scored a franchise high 23 runs.

Oregon State football player Jordan Poyer of Astoria hit the Knights' first homer at Goss Stadium as Corvallis blasted the WCL Portland Lobos 23-3 before 786 fans on Cowbell Night on a frigid night in the Mid-Valley.

Poyer went 2-for-2 with 3 RBI and a home run.

Fans rang their cowbells all night as the Knights banged out 23 hits, a season high.

"I had a better approach, saw some pitches and just tried to put a good swing on it," said Thomas McCarthy.

McCarthy added, "Just a couple days ago we went through this game about getting to know everyone's name and getting each other. Since that we've come together and had some energy and it's been working out for us on the field."

Infielder Justin Viele of Santa Clara went 4-for-6 with two doubles and 2 RBI.

"We just had a better approach early in the game," said Viele. "It's about just going up and wanting to hit, not waiting around and hoping someone else is going to start it."

Designated hitter Scott Lyman of UC Davis collected 4 RBI and went 3-for-6 with a double. Lyman now has 7 RBI in two games with the Knights.

Corvallis used five pitchers. Kyle Kraus of UP started and tossed two scoreless innings. Dean McArdle of Stanford pitched two innings, allowed one run and was credited with the win. Reliever Ross Pomerantz of Occidental College twirled two innings and gave up two runs. Aaron Corwin of Feather River pitched two scoreless innings and Eric Young of Riverside CC one scoreless inning to close out the game.

With the win, the Knights improve their overall record to 5-6.

Corvallis and the Portland Lobos play again on Saturday night. It's Pioneer Telephone Military Appreciation & Fireworks Night. Game time is 7:05 pm.

You can catch the game on KEJO 1240 AM. Mike Parker and Jason Schwartz call all the action.
