Corvallis takes series with 4-3 extra-inning victory over Kelowna.

Mike Cusick of Western Oregon tossed 4 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Corvallis needed big hits by Kyle Cruikshank of Golden West College and Drew Garcia of UC Riverside in the 8th-inning (to tie the game) and Cruikshank again and WCCBL All-Star Matt Wyckoff of George Fox in the 10th-inning to win it. Cruikshank went 3 for 5 on the night.

The Knights also needed Jake Roy's diving catch in rightfield in the seventh-inning to keep the score close.

The Knights defense continues to shine as Corvallis recorded its 5th consecutive game without an error. Corvallis leads the league in team defense with a .976 fielding percentage. Shortstop Josh Hogan of Mt. Hood CC (pictured) has anchored the infield defense with exceptional play at both second and short.

Greg Peavey, a frosh-to be at Oregon State, made his first Knights start. He pitched 5 innings and allowed 4 hits and two runs.

"It was alright, not great," said Peavey. "I was throwing mostly fastballs and sliders tonight."

Cusick was the night's pitching star as he kept the Falcons grounded allowing only 3 hits while striking out 4. Over 8 appearances and 18 2/3 innings pitched, the frosh right-hander has recorded 19 strikeouts and is 2-2 with a 4.34 ERA.

Down 3-2 going into the bottom of eight, Cruikshank got things started with a single to left. Wyckoff advanced Cruikshank to second with a sac bunt and Garcia tied things up with a RBI single to center.

It was Cruikshank who got things started again with another single to left in the bottom of the tenth. Wyckoff followed with the biggest hit of the game, a double to left-center.

"It was pretty good," Wyckoff said of the Falcons pitching. "It's hard in this league because every pitcher is good and you just have to wait for that fastball and drive it." After Wyckoff's clutch hit, Garcia was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out.

With the sacks juiced, head coach Matt Dorey called on Braden Wells of Oregon State to pinch-hit. On the second pitch he saw, Wells grounded to third. The Falcons third baseman threw home for the force on pinch-runner Blake Keitzman of OSU, but Kelowna's catcher dropped the ball as he attempted to turn a 5-2-3 double play prematurely. The error gave Corvallis the win and series win. It was the Falcons 10th one-run loss.

With the win, Corvallis improves to 22-10 overall and 15-8 in league. The Knights are now is sole possession of first place as Bend dropped an extra-inning affair tonight at Spokane.

Thursday night, the Knights go for the sweep on Bike Night presented by Hope 107.9 FM. Game time is 7:05 pm at Goss Stadium.
