Fricke's gem gives Knights series victory at Kitsap.
July 30, 2016Jacob Fricke (pictured) spaced eight hits in a complete-game, 8-3 triumph over Kitsap on Saturday that gave the Knights a series victory over the BlueJackets.
A sophomore-to-be lefty at Western Oregon, Fricke struck out two, walked one and threw 69 strikes in an efficient 87-pitch performance. He retired 13 straight BlueJackets in one span and improved to 4-0 with his longest outing of the summer.
It was just the second complete game of the summer for Corvallis. The other, by Branden Cutsforth (Northern Colorado in 2017), was a seven-inning effort against Wenatchee in the second game of a July 7 doubleheader.
The Knights (35-19 overall, 28-19 WCL, 10-10 second half) extended their winning streak to four games in row, their longest such stretch of success in the second half. Their longest winning streak this season is five games, from June 17-22.
Andrew Reichenbach (George Fox) and Greg Saenz (Grand Canyon) had three hits each and Zak Taylor (Oregon State) added two. Saenz, Matt Kelly (Portland) and Kyle Nobach (OSU) added two RBIs each.
Saenz's RBI single gave Corvallis a 1-0 lead in the second. Kitsap tied the score in the bottom half but the Knight erupted for four runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead, and never looked back.
Nobach led off the third with his first homer of the summer, breaking the tie. With two outs, Kelly (Portland) slapped a two-run double and Cameron Bishop (UC Irvine) added an RBI single for the insurmountable 5-1 advantage.
The series concludes at 5:05 p.m. Sunday. Central Arizona lefty Ryley Widell (3-1, 2.62) is the projected starter for the Knights.
