June 25, 2007Clayton Shaw (pictured) of University of Portland collected 3 hits in the Knights first league road defeat. Corvallis dropped its series opener vs. the AppleSox at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium before a Sox crowd of 1,200. Starter Eric Massingham of Cal Poly SLO made his 2007 debut going 5 innings while allowing 7 hits, 3 runs and 2 earned runs.
The Knights led 4-3 going to the bottom of the seventh, but the Sox scored 3 in the 7th and a run in the 8th off reliever Brad Kidd of BYU to earn the victory and snap their 3-game losing streak and the Knights 3-game winning streak. Zach Mandelblatt, a Lake Oswego High School product, went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and a triple to spark the Sox. Mandelblatt led off the 7th with a triple. Aaron Russell of UW would follow with a single to plate Mandelblatt. Ryan Davis of Vanderbilt hit the next pitch for a double putting runners at second and third. The Sox would then score two more on consecutive sacrifice flies.
Shaw, a freshman third baseman from Everett, Washington, delivered a two-out RBI single in the sixth after consecutive two-out doubles by Jordan Post of PLU and Rocky Gale of UP. The two runs gave Corvallis the short lived 4-3 advantage. The Knights banged out a (league) season high 11 hits.
Sox reliever Kyle Foster of Oregon State picked up the win.
Corvallis drops to 12-4 overall and 8-2 in the WCCBL.
The Knights were made aware on Monday that they will not retain the services of Dave Wong of Oregon State. The Pac-10 notified OSU compliance that Wong won't be allowed to coach this summer because of NCAA rules regarding coaching his own players. Corvallis was looking forward to Wong joining the club here soon. The Knights OSU players, Erik Ammon, Blake Keitzman and Braden Wells, are likely to meet up with the club in Spokane on Thursday. Brett Casey is already with the team and has made six starts and is hitting .250.
Corvallis and Wenatchee play game two of their series Tuesday night at 7 pm. Tonight's game can be heard on 990 AM The Legend.
Tuesday's pitching matchup features a Cougar vs. a Husky as the Knights' Matt Way of WSU and the Sox Elliott Cribby of UW are the scheduled starters.
