Knights beat Wenatchee 8-1 to take seventh consecutive WCCBL series.
July 26, 2008Jon Berger (pictured) of San Diego State pitched six solid innings to earn the win. The senior-to be right-hander from Las Vegas improved his record to 3-0 as Jon allowed only three hits and one run while walking three and striking out three.
Berger leads the staff in innings pitched with 44, starts with 7 and strikeouts with 42.
Alex Burg of Washington State put an exclamation point on what would be a series clinching win vs. the AppleSox when the junior catcher ripped a bases clearing double in the 7th to give Corvallis a 8-1 lead.
"It was 3-1 and I was looking for a fastball and I got it," Burg said. "I just tried not to do too much with it."
In front of a crowd of 616, Corvallis trailed 1-0 early as Wenatchee's Jimmy Patterson of Central Arizona led off the second with a solo homer. But that is all the AppleSox could muster as the Knights' pitching and defense continued to shine.
Corvallis rewarded Berger's effort with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Third baseman Doug Cherry of Washington led things off with a push bunt down the first baseline. Cherry slid head first avoiding the first baseman's tag to earn a single.
Cherry advanced on a sac bunt by Riverside CC shortstop Richie Jimenez. After moving to third on a balk, Cherry scored on a single by Logan Lotti, a junior-to be at OSU.
After Mt. Hood CC outfielder Billy Clontz reached on a fielder's choice, Clontz hustled home on a double to left-center by Cal Poly centerfielder Adam Melker.
Melker then scored on a throwing error by the Sox shortstop on a ground ball by Burg.
The Knights got things going again in the seventh when call-up D.J. Johnson of Mt. Hood CC led off with a single to right. Johnson was promoted in the morning and made it to the park by early afternoon. The left-handed slugger was shining for the Knights' affiliate club the Gresham Mountaineers.
"It was really cool to get called up," said Johnson. "It is a great opportunity to get to play for the father team."
Johnson advanced on a sac bunt by second baseman Josh Hogan of Mt. Hood CC.
Cherry followed with a single to left and advanced to second on a throwing error by Wenatchee's leftfielder as Johnson waltzed to third.
Jimenez then singled to right scoring Johnson.
Lotti followed with another single to right scoring Cherry.
Up 5-1, with two outs, Melker drew a walk before Burg delivered his three-run double giving Corvallis the 8-1 lead.
Jimenez finished the night 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Lotti went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Lotti now leads the team in hitting (.355), HR (4) and RBI (21).
"We started off the game a little shaky," said Lotti. "We kind of busted it open in the sixth and seven. Hits are contagious. We kept our heads in our own dugout not getting caught up in emotions and got us another win."
Junior reliever Ben Rue of Concordia replaced Berger and pitched a scoreless seventh while striking out two.
Chris Brookey, a soph-to be at Southwestern College, made his team leading 14th appearance. Brookey pitched out of trouble to hold the Sox scoreless in the 8th.
Geoff Nichols, a junior-to be at Oregon, pitched a scoreless ninth to finish things. Nichols lowered his ERA to 0.64. Geoff has made 12 relief appearances and has struck out 20 over 14 innings pitched.
With the win, Corvallis improves to 23-9 in the WCCBL. Wenatchee dropped to 18-14.
The Knights look to sweep the Sox for first time on Sunday. Wenatchee has lost 7 straight games, but still leads the East by two games.
Corvallis leads Bend by 6 games in the West.
The series finale can be heard on 990 AM The Legend as Mike Parker, the voice of the Knights, calls all the action.
