Yakima Valley comeback earns win over Knights.
July 17, 2015Starter Slater Lee (pictured) pitched into the ninth on Friday night but Yakima Valley scored three runs in its final at-bat to steal a 4-3 win over Corvallis.
Lee (Cal Poly) gave up a single and two walks to start the final half-inning. One run scored on a groundout, and he was pulled in favor of Harrison McGhee (Concordia), who had saved Thursday night's 2-1 win.
However, McGhee balked home the tying run and then gave up a single that scored the winning run.
The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Knights (24-16 all, 19-16 WCL). It also moved the Pippins (19-16) into a tie for the WCL's wild-card playoff berth.
Corvallis trailed early but tied the game 1-1 in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Cole Kreuter (UC Irvine). It took a 2-1 lead on a throwing error in the sixth and its third run in the seventh on a double steal.
The series concludes at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. The starter for the Knights is undetermined; Jens Jensen (4-0, 2.86) of Lewis-Clark State is the projected starter for the Pippins.
The Knights are idle on Sunday; Lee and infielder Michael Farris (UC Riverside) will participate in the W CL All-Star Game in Bellingham on Monday. Corvallis resumes WCL play at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series against Cowlitz at Goss Stadium.
