BlueJackets edge Knights 2-1.

Center fielder Nate Blackham (pictured) singled, scored and stole two bases but the Knights were stymied on seven hits by Kitsap starter Kevin Baumgartner and three relievers.

It was the second shutout loss in the last four games for the Knights (18-6, 17-6 West Coast League). It also ended a two-game winning streak and tied the series heading into Sundays Game 3.

Kitsap scored a pair of two-out runs in the third off Knights' starter Bryan Granger of Cal Poly. Baumgartner, Barry Timko and Colin Feldtman subsequently pitched out of several jams to protect the lead and give the BlueJackets (7-21 WCL) only their third win in their last 23 games.

Baumgartner allowed six hits and no runs in seven innings. Timko retired Alex Michaels of Cal Poly with the bases loaded to end the eighth and Feldtman pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

Granger gave up two runs and nine hits in a season-long seven innings. He had six strikeouts and one walk, and most of the hits off him were soft opposite-field singles.

"I felt good about how strong I pitched," said Granger, who is 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA in 19 innings in three starters after going 1-1, 3.60 in 30 innings in eight starts for the Mustangs as a true freshman. "Pitching here is a lot more relaxed."

Greg Mahle finished up with two scoreless innings.

The Knights scored their only run in the eighth, Blackham singled and Caleb Whalen walked with one out and stole a base to move to third and second. Blackham scored on an infield err before Timko got Michaels on a ground out to first to end the threat.

The series resumes at 5:15 p.m. Sunday. Lefty Dylan Stuart (0-0, 6.00) of UC Riverside will go for the Knights. Mondays 7:15 p.m. series finale is our annual OSU Federal Credit Union Fireworks Night.

Earlier Saturday, the Knights alumni team defeated a Mid-Valley amateur team 9-4 to highlight Alumni Day activities. The Knights also hosted nearly 140 kids at their annual youth clinic, sponsored by Starker Forests.
