Kitsap comeback tops Knights 4-3, sweeps the series.
June 30, 2013Shortstop Peter Van Gansen had two singles, a double and two RBIs but Corvallis fell 4-3 at Kitsap on Sunday to complete a nightmarish weekend in Silverdale, Wash.
Kitsap (7-15) scored four times in the seventh to erase a 3-0 deficit and then escaped jams in the eighth and ninth innings to send the Knights staggering home with a 2-4 record on their six-game road trip.
Starter Devon Barker took a 3-0 lead into the seventh but a single, a hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases with one out. One run scored on a sacrifice fly and another crossed on a double to make it 3-2. Dylan Hecht relieved and gave up a bad-hop single that scored the tying and go-ahead runs.
Corvallis (13-12 overall, 12-12 WCL) loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but reliever Brandon Luper induced pinch-hitter Gus Craig to hit into a 5U, 5-3 double play to end the threat. Luper then stranded the tying run on second in the top of the ninth to save his second game in a row.
Luper also saved Kitsap's 6-4 win on Saturday by ending that game on a double play with the tying run at the plate. Kitsap took Friday's opener 2-1 with run in the last of the ninth.
On Sunday, the Knights zipped ahead 2-0 in the third inning. Grant Melker singled and went to third on a wild pitch and a single by Blake Drake. Van Gansen's double drove in Melker, and Drake scored on a Kevin Kline groundout.
Van Gansen drove in another run in the seventh when his single scored Drake, aboard on a one-out double. But that was all for Corvallis, which stranded 10 runners, running their two-game total to 22.
Corvallis opens an 11-game homestand on Tuesday with a 6:40 p.m. game against Bellingham; Chris Bishop (0-2, 2.41) is the projected starter. Wednesday is Fireworks Night; gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the game starts at 7:15 p.m.
