July 16, 2014Second baseman Kevin Farley (pictured) of Portland had three hits and scored four times on Wednesday to lead Corvallis to a 13-4 win over the NCBL Portland Stars.
Shortstop Michael Lucarelli of Portland added a double and three singles; right fielder Phil Leopold of Bellarmine doubled and drove in three runs, and catcher Logan Ice of OSU and left fielder Dane Lund of OSU each doubled, singled and had two RBIs for the Knights (25-12 all, 21-12 WCL). Corvallis completed a two-game sweep of NCBL opposition with its fifth straight win.
The Knights scored five times in the first inning and one in the third to take a 6-0 lead. The Stars parlayed four hits and three errors into four runs in the fifth to draw within 6-4, but Corvallis replied with six runs in the bottom half to pull away.
Pitcher Jake Otness of PLU, a recent addition to the team, struck out five, took a no-hitter into the fifth-inning and scattered six hits over seven innings for the victory. Jason Snodgrass of Concordia and Austin Sodders of Riverside CC finished up with an inning apiece.
The Knights head to Bellingham on Thursday for the opener of a three-game series with the West Division-leading Bells, owners of the best record in the WCL. Jackson Lockwood (6-1, 2.13) of Portland, a WCL All-Star Game selection, is the projected starter for the Knights, opposed by Seth Martinez (3-0, 3.22) of Arizona State.
Wednesday's crowd of 1,149 upped the 2014 attendance to 30,991 in 25 openings. That's 1,293 fewer than in 2013 through a corresponding number of home dates; the Knights drew a franchise-record 43,557 fans last summer.
