July 17, 2007The Knights Matt Way (pictured) of Washington State was named the game's top prospect by Major League scouts. Way pitched a scoreless inning allowing one hit while striking out 2. Way was scheduled to start Thursday night's game at Kelowna, but the game has been washed out due to heavy rain. Thursday's contest will be made up as part of a Friday night twi-night doubleheader starting at 5 pm.
Knights' outfielder Matt Wyckoff of George Fox started in rightfield and hit second for the West All-Stars. Corvallis first baseman Jim Murphy of Washington State started at first base and hit fourth. Wyckoff went 0 for 3 and Murphy 0 for 1 with a hit-by-pitch. JR Murphy of San Diego State pitched one inning and gave up two runs.
Pitcher Mike Koons of San Diego State was an All-Star selection, but couldn't play in Tuesday night's showcase as he signed a professional contract earlier in the day. Koons will report next week and pitch for the Houston Astros Class A affiliate Tri-City Valley Cats in the New York-Penn League.
Head coach Matt Dorey was an assistant on the West squad.
WCCBL Commissioner Jim Dietz of Florence, Oregon threw out the first pitch.
Wenatchee's Ryan Davis of Vanderbilt and Kitsap's Brandon Kuykendall of Benedictine College were named All-Star Game co-MVPS as announced by Carl Moesche of the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau and picked by the over 10 Major League scouts in attendance.
The WCCBL's second annual All-Star Game was played before a crowd of 997 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Washington.
The Knights return to Joe Martin for a series with the Bells starting on Sunday, July 22.
