AppleSox even series with 5-3 win over Knights before crowd of 1,456 at Paul Thomas Stadium.
July 31, 2010Dylan Jones (pictured) of OSU went 2-for-4 and pitched 4 innings of scoreless relief.
Jones scored the Knights first run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI double by Daniel Dillard of Western Oregon. The southpaw from Aloha, Oregon also struck out 4 over 4 innings.
Starter Nick Hoover of UC Irvine had control issues early and the Sox took advantage scoring four runs in the first inning.
That's all Wenatchee starter Michael McIver of St. Martin's needed as the 6'10" southpaw scattered 10 hits to earn the win, his sixth of the summer.
AppleSox closer Jeff Ames of Lower Columbia College thwarted a Knights' ninth-inning rally to register the save.
Corvallis made things interesting in the final frame as Dillard and third baseman Griffin Boyd of Mt. Hood CC singled with one out, and after a fly out to center by catcher Miles Kizer of UW, first baseman Thomas McCarthy, a junior-to-be at Kentucky, doubled home Dillard and Boyd to make it 5-3 Sox.
Ames replaced McIver and walked pinch-hitter Corey Davis of Mt. Hood CC, and after second baseman Matt Duffy of Long Beach State just missed hitting a game-tying double down the rightfield line that just went foul, the hard-throwing right-hander struck out Duffy on a 2-2 pitch to end the game.
Hoover took his first loss of the season.
Dillard, Jones, McCarthy and Duffy all collected two hits.
With the loss, Corvallis drops to 27-16 in the WCL.
The series rubber game is set for Sunday at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. Game time is 7:05 pm.
You can catch the series finale on KEJO 1240 AM or on the Internet at www.kpq.com. Chris King, the voice of the AppleSox, calls all the action.
