Soto, Cleary spark Knights in 22-0 rout of Sea Dogs.
June 4, 2014Corvallis High grad Jimmy Cleary (pictured) had four hits and two RBIs on Wednesday to lead Corvallis to a 22-0 win over the Portland Sea Dogs.
Cleary is a rising junior center fielder at Linfield who is a 10-day signee. He had a triple and three singles in his WCL debut.
A Science, Arts and Engineering Day crowd of 2,485 on opening day at Goss Stadium also saw West Albany senior Jackson Soto add four hits and three RBIs. An Oregon State signee, he tripled, doubled and scored twice; OSU recruit Trace Loehr of Rex Putnam added two hits, two RBIs and four runs.
Tim Rausch of Western Oregon had two hits, two RBIs, and scored six runs; Phillip Leopold of Bellarmine had two hits and two runs and Marc Gallegos of Corban and Michael Lucarelli of Portland had two hits each for the Knights.
Six Knights pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts and gave up just one hit. Ex-OSU standout Kevin Gunderson pitched the first five innings for the Sea Dogs, a team of former collegians and pros from the Portland area.
The Knights open their West Coast League season at 6:35 p.m. Friday at Bend. Concordia junior Harrison McGhee, a Cascade Collegiate Conference all-star, is their projected starter. The series continues through Sunday.
The Knights begin their WCL home schedule against the Yakima Valley Pippins at 6:40 p.m. on June 11 in the opener of a three-game series against the league's newest expansion team.
