Surrey handcuffs Rogues, Knights take first place.
July 26, 2013Lefty Elliot Surrey (pictured) pitched the first complete game of the summer for Corvallis with a 4-0 masterpiece over Medford at Goss before a crowd of 1,755.
Surrey handcuffed the Rogues (20-22 WCL) on seven hits as the Knights (28-15 all, 24-15 WCL) completed a home series sweep before an appreciative Cap Night crowd of 1,755. They also assumed sole possession of first place in the South Division when Bend lost 5-2 to Klamath Falls and dropped out of a tie at the top.
A rising sophomore at UC Irvine, Surrey threw 65 strikes in a career-high 100 pitches. He struck out four, walked one, and faced only seven batters over the nine-inning minimum in the two-hour, five-minute gem. He lowered his ERA to a league-best 1.26 from 1.68.
"Part of (his success) goes to them swinging at first pitches, getting me easy outs," Surrey said. "Part of the credit goes to Lambo (pitching coach Connor Lambert) for knowing what to call in that situation, knowing they would be swinging early in the count.
"That's what led to the success of going the full nine. We knew they were early hackers and if we just laid it in there for them they would get themselves out."
The Knights gave Surrey all the support he needed with three runs in the third inning. Kevin Kline's RBI double drove in the first run; Gabe Clark of OSU followed with a two-run double.
Seth Heck's RBI single in the eighth inning completed the scoring. Blake Drake also doubled and Michael Lucarelli of Portland had two hits for the Knights.
Drake of Concordia also had the night's top defensive play, throwing out Spencer Smith at home from center field for the second out of the first inning when Smith tried to score on Kevin Davidson's single.
It was the final game for Corvallis reliever Dylan Hecht, who is returning to UC Santa Barbara for a summer school class. Hecht was 0-2, 3.06 with 18 strikeouts in 14.2 innings over eight appearances.
The Knights open a 6-game Canadian road trip at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Victoria, British Columbia, in their first meeting with the expansion HarbourCats. Casey Bloomquist of Cal Poly (3-0, 3.37) is their scheduled starter. Corvallis then visits Kelowna on July 30-Aug. 1.
