Quinlan's HR leads Knights to big 9-3 win over Kelowna.
June 20, 2014Outfielder Scott Quinlan (pictured) hit a two-run home run and Corvallis won its third game in a row on Friday, 9-3 over Kelowna at Goss Stadium.
Quinlan's blast, his first of the season, capped a four-run fifth inning that erased a 2-1 deficit. A sacrifice fly by Marc Gallegos and an RBI double by Jackson Soto directly preceded Quinlan's shot, which easily cleared the taller portion of the left-field fence.
"It was a new pitcher, I was timing him up well," said Quinlan, a senior-to-be at UC Santa Barbara whose homer came on reliever Tyler Sanders' first pitch. "I got one right over the plate, and the wind helped."
He also tripled off the wall in left-center in the seventh but was thrown out trying for an inside-the-park homer. Quinlan was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and is hitting .438 (7-16) since joining the Knights (9-5 all, 8-5 WCL) this past Monday.
"I feel like I've found my groove," he said.
The Knights have 11 home runs in 13 games, led by Joe Duffin and Kevin Kline, who have four apiece. They hit 16 in 54 WCL games in 2013; Kline and Duffin shared the team lead with four apiece.
Cal Poly freshman Justin Calomeni got the win in his first start. He allowed two runs and seven hits over 5.2 innings, struck out six and issued just one walk. Stephen White and Merrick Patito finished up.
Kelowna took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. But the Knights quickly tied it in the home half when Grant Melker walked, took second on an errant pickoff throw and scored on Dane Lund's single.
The Falcons went back ahead 2-1 in the fourth but the Knights answered with the four-spot in the fifth and never looked back. Kline and Duffin added RBIs in the sixth inning to send the Knights on top 7-2, breaking the game open.
Duffin added another RBI double and Gallegos had an RBI single in the eighth to finish the 10-hit attack. The Knights had a homer, a triple and three doubles; Duffin was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Gallegos also knocked in two.
Kline doubled, singled, scored twice and drove in a run. He and Duffin are also tied for the team lead with 16 RBIs apiece. Oregon State catcher Logan Ice made his debut for the Knights and was 1-for-3.
The series resumes at 6:40 p.m. Saturday at Goss Stadium. Austin Lambright (0-1, 5.40) is Kelowna's scheduled starter; the Knights' probable is TBA. The series concludes at 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
Friday's crowd of 1,191 raised the season attendance to 9,670 in eight openings. That's 718 more fans than through a corresponding number of home dates in 2013, when the Knights drew a team-record 43,529 fans.
