Armendariz caps ninth-inning rally to sweep Sweets.

David Armendariz (pictured) hammered a bases-loaded single up the middle to score the winning run as the Knights rallied in their final at-bat to edge Walla Walla 4-3 before 1,927 fans at Goss.

The Knights (11-7, 10-7 WCL) trailed 3-2 entering the ninth but Sweets' reliever Sean Santschi immediately walked Trent Oleszczuk and Corey Davis. He was replaced by Jimmy Litchfield, who subsequently walked Jimmy Allen and David Andriese to force in Oleszczuk with the tying run.

With a season-high crowd of 1,927 on its feet, Armendariz drilled the first pitch he saw cleanly up the middle to knock in Davis with the winner. The Knights have now won seven consecutive home games, and have swept two of their three home WCL series.

"There were no outs and we needed a run," said Armendariz, a sophomore-to-be at Cal Poly who was 2-for-5. "I was sitting fastball and that's what I wanted to hit.

"I knew the pitcher," as Litchfield was the top reliever for Big West Conference rival UC Irvine this spring. "He has a good changeup, so I was hoping I didnt get that pitch."

He didn't, and now Corvallis is tied with Bend for second place in the West Division, one game behind Kitsap. The Knights open a three-game series with the BlueJackets on Monday night in Silverdale, Washington.

The Sweets (5-10) have now lost six in a row and 8 of their last 10 league games. They departed Corvallis on a 13-hour bus trip to Kelowna, British Columbia, where they'll face the Falcons at 6:05 p.m. Sunday.

The Knights played from behind all night, tying the score 1-1 in the third on Davis's RBI bunt single, and 2-2 in the fifth on Davis's bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Both plays scored Alex Foulon, who was 3-for-4 and flawlessly handled four tough chances at shortstop.

Walla Walla went back ahead in the eighth on Elliot Stewart's solo homer off reliever Mark Trentacosta. It was the first run allowed by Trentacosta in five appearances, but he didn't allow another one and improved to 2-0 when the Knights rallied.

Oleszczuk reached safely in all five plate appearances, with two hits and three walks. He's now hitting .444 (8-18) in five games since joining the Knights earlier this week, with a .545 on-base percentage.

Next up for the Knights is their annual exhibition game against the T. Gerding Construction (formerly Richeys Market) American Legion team, set for 5:15 p.m. Sunday. The Knights' starting pitcher has not been determined.

Corvallis resumes WCL action on Monday in the opener of the aforementioned series at Kitsap.

The next home game is a Block 15 Thursday on June 30 against the two-time defending WCL-champion Wenatchee AppleSox. It's also Albany Night, presented by Samaritan Health Services, and Halloween in June; all fans are encouraged to come in costume.
