Knights top Pirates 3-2, sweep Moses Lake. Corvallis extends its winning streak to 8 games.
July 6, 2008Jon Berger (pictured) of San Diego State turned in another quality start. The right-hander from Las Vegas tossed 6 innings allowing only one unearned run. The Pirates two runs were both unearned as Corvallis uncharacteristically committed four errors.
The Knights wrapped up their second consecutive home series sweep by beating Moses Lake 3-2.
Corvallis scored the game's winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out, two-strike wild pitch.
Corvallis went 6-0 on the homestand to improve to 15-6 in the WCCBL.
Taylor Starr of Oregon State shut the door on the Pirates with three strikeouts in the ninth to earn his third save of season, all on this homestand.
"I really like this closer's role," said Starr. "It feels good that the coaches have the confidence in me to put me out there with a one run lead in the ninth."
Corvallis struck first in the fourth as Billy Clontz of Mt. Hood CC singled, advanced to second on a groundout, then alertly stole third, before scoring on a single by catcher Alex Burg of Washington State.
Burg advanced to third on a single by Oklahoma State's Dean Green and scored on a two-out RBI single by Matt Wyckoff of George Fox.
Berger dazzled on the hill striking out eight in his six innings.
"Jon mixed in his change up very well tonight and got ahead in counts," Starr said. "He was able to get guys out and kept them off the board."
Moses Lake tied the score in the seventh off Oregon junior-to be pitcher Geoff Nichols. The inning started with a two-base error by Wyckoff in right and ended with Ty Rubio getting caught stealing home, Nichols to Burg. In the middle, the Pirates scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly and Nichols walked three batters. The attempted steal of home happened with the bases loaded.
"Our team has been pretty good defensively at home," Starr said. "Our pitching was able to pick us up though with some of the mistakes today."
In the eighth, Oregon State's John Wallace led-off with a walk. Doug Cherry of University of Washington then sac bunted Wallace to second. With two outs and Cal Poly's Adam Melker at the plate, Wallace scored on back-to-back wild pitches advancing to third then home on separate balls that got away from the Pirates' catcher.
In the top of the ninth, Moses Lake got the tying run to third and winning run to first with two outs. With the count 3-1 on the batter, it looked like Moses Lake would rally. But Starr then pumped in two strikes to close the game and record his third punch out of the inning.
Chris Brookey, a soph-to be at Southwestern (JC), pitched a scoreless eighth to pickup the win much to the delight of Brookey Nation, a fan club gathering steam in the Mid-Valley.
"We are doing what we have to do to get the wins," Knights' head coach Brooke Knight said. "We had been playing so well defensively, but tonight we got a good showing from Jon."
Monday is a travel day for the Knights as they head to Kelowna for a three-game series with the Falcons.
